About the role

The Enterprise Portfolio Office (EPO) is a strategic and proactive function, responsible for facilitating and supporting effective delivery of AEMO's change agenda and investments, focusing on the right decisions, at the right time, delivering business and customer outcomes while managing critical risks.

The Enterprise Portfolio Investment Lead plays a pivotal role in shaping and governing the enterprise-wide investment planning and approval processes. This role is responsible for ensuring that all investment decisions are strategically aligned, financially sound, and operationally optimised.

The Lead will oversee the development and maintenance of the Integrated Investment Plan, facilitate efficient and transparent investment approvals, and establish a robust framework for benefits realisation.

This position is critical to enabling the organisation to make informed, value-driven investment decisions that support long-term strategic objectives and deliver measurable benefits.

Role Responsibilities
  • Lead the end-to-end enterprise investment planning process, ensuring alignment with corporate strategy and operational priorities.
  • Maintain and continuously update the Enterprise Demand Register to reflect current and emerging investment needs across the organisation.
  • Facilitate the prioritisation of investment initiatives based on a balanced assessment of business value, strategic alignment, risk exposure, and delivery constraints.
  • Identify and evaluate opportunities to optimise the investment portfolio through alignment, bundling, and sequencing of initiatives.
  • Provide critical input into the organisation's annual budget cycle and 5-Year Outlook by translating investment priorities into financial forecasts.
  • Govern and manage the enterprise investment approval process, ensuring it is efficient, scalable, and fit-for-purpose across varying investment types and sizes.
  • Support the preparation and review of funding requests from major programs and projects, ensuring alignment with governance standards and strategic priorities.
  • Coordinate with key governance forums including the Investment Committee, Portfolio Assessment Forum, and ELT sponsors to facilitate timely and informed investment decisions.
  • Ensure that approval processes are clearly documented, consistently applied, and continuously improved to reflect organisational maturity and regulatory expectations.
  • Establish and maintain a comprehensive framework for the identification, assessment, and tracking of investment benefits across the portfolio.
Experience and Knowledge
  • Extensive experience in enterprise portfolio management, investment governance, or strategic planning within a complex, multi-stakeholder environment.
  • In-depth understanding of investment lifecycle processes, including demand management, prioritisation, business case development, approval workflows, and benefits realisation.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional planning and governance forums, with a strong track record of influencing senior stakeholders and driving consensus.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to synthesise complex information and present clear, actionable insights.
  • Proficiency in enterprise portfolio management tools (e.g., Horizon PPM, Power BI) and data-driven decision making.
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to tailor messaging for executive, technical, and operational audiences.
  • Proven ability to drive continuous improvement and embed best practices in governance, reporting, and investment management.
Education
  • Bachelor or Masters degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Project Management accreditation / certification, or substantial equivalent experience of specialist professional development in project management.
