    Your Role

    The role contributes to the provision of a high level and specialised range of quasi-judicial/legal support services to the judiciary, the Court and its clients. The role exercises the powers of the Court (in both civil and criminal jurisdictions) as provided for by relevant Acts, procedures, rules and other relevant legislation to ensure that legal and procedural issues are dealt with in a professional and timely manner.

    What You'll Do

    The Supreme Court of New South Wales is the highest court in New South Wales and hears civil, criminal, and appellate matters. The Supreme Court is responsible for the administration of justice in New South Wales.

    An Opportunity Has Opened In The Registry For a Legally Qualified Person To Be Appointed As a Deputy Registrar. The Deputy Registrar Has Been Delegated Power By The Chief Justice To
    • assess and determine probate applications
    • determine chamber applications, for example, the enforcement of judgments, granting leave to issue subpoenas, making orders for substituted service, registering foreign judgments
    • sit in court to conduct examinations under the Corporations Act 2001, Criminal Assets Recovery Act 1900, Evidence on Commission Act 1995; and
    • conduct mediations under the court-annexed mediation scheme (Legal Officer III only).

    The Deputy Registrar also sits as the Duty Registrar to provide procedural information to litigants, the legal profession and registry staff.

    What We're Looking For
    • Candidates that have an interest in Probate and Civil procedure.
    • An understanding of the Supreme Court Act 1970, Civil Procedure Act 2005, related rules, practice and procedure, preferably with litigation experience and strong academics.
    • A person who is willing to attend the registry in-person each weekday (due to the nature of the work performed, working from home cannot be accommodated).
    • Attention to detail, with strong skills in time management and prioritising work.
    • Candidates able to work independently.
    • A person who acts with high levels of integrity and has a desire to be involved in the administration of justice.

    Essential Requirement

    Admitted as a legal practitioner in NSW (or another State or Territory within Australia).

    The types of matters that come before the Supreme Court may give rise to exposure to sensitive and concerning material. Potential candidates are encouraged as part of the recruitment process to make enquiries regarding any potential psychosocial hazards that they may be exposed to as part of this role.

    A talent pool may be created for future ongoing and temporary roles and is valid for a period of up to 18 months.
