About Muswellbrook Race Club

Muswellbrook Race Club (MRC) conducts 18 TAB thoroughbred race meetings each year and is the training centre for approximately 80 horses each Monday - Saturday.

Racing and training facilities include a course proper, B-grass, sand and cinders tracks. The MRC's racing/administration and function centre is currently undergoing a multi-million-dollar renovation and when completed in early 2026 will hold non-racing events including wedding receptions, seminars, conferences and festive parties.

The Role

MRC is seeking a talented Manager Tracks and Grounds to lead a team and to deliver excellence in Country Racing NSW.

Reporting to the General Manager, this permanent full-time position is responsible for the ongoing day-to-day management and maintenance of Muswellbrook racecourse thoroughbred racing and training surfaces plus its grounds/gardens.

The Manager Tracks and Grounds will ensure the MRC meets the highest standards of safety, consistency, and performance. The successful candidate will hold appropriate accreditation in horticulture or green keeping.

This role requires extensive knowledge of track composition, moisture management, equipment operation, and horse welfare.

Key ResponsibilitiesTrack and Grounds Maintenance & Safety
  • Oversee the preparation and daily maintenance of the racing and training facilities in line with Racing NSW industry standards
  • Develop, plan and report trackwork and maintenance programs plus plans for MRC gardens and grounds
  • Monitor weather and moisture levels to maintain ideal track conditions
  • Conduct daily track inspections and ensure consistent surface integrity
  • Implement safety protocols to minimise injury risk to horses and riders
Equipment & Operations Management
  • Manage and maintain all track and grounds-related machinery (tractors, mowers, etc.)
  • Schedule and supervise equipment usage and servicing
  • Ensure all maintenance practices comply with industry and regulatory standards
  • Organise external contractors when required
  • Maintenance and servicing of irrigation and water supply systems
Staff Supervision & Scheduling
  • Recruit, train, and manage a team of track and grounds personnel
  • Coordinate shift schedules, workload distribution, and safety compliance
  • Provide hands-on leadership and ensure a strong safety culture
  • Roster race day staff
Stakeholder Communication
  • Effective communication and relationships with stakeholders including MRC GM, racing officials, stewards, veterinarians, and trainers regarding track conditions
  • Respond to feedback and adapt maintenance plans accordingly
  • Attend race day meetings and provide track condition updates as needed
Compliance & Reporting
  • Maintain records of track maintenance, inspections, and weather impacts
  • Ensure compliance with relevant racing authority regulations and safety guidelines
  • Oversight of the MRC WHS
Qualifications & Experience
  • Experience in thoroughbred racing and training track maintenance or equivalent
  • Appropriate accreditation in horticulture or green keeping
  • Strong knowledge of racing surface materials, equipment operation, and maintenance protocols
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team in a fast-paced, safety-critical environment
  • Familiarity with industry regulations and animal welfare best practices
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience with heavy machinery and irrigation systems
  • A sound knowledge of Microsoft office programs including Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Accreditation in AQF3 chemical application
  • Current First Aid or willingness to obtain
  • Continue up-to-date knowledge of herbicides and fertilisers
Essential

Valid Class C Drivers License
Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, weekends, and race days
