These programs provide essential data and expertise for most of the regional healthy waterways reports cards as well as the Great Barrier Reef Report card. The group has supported a number of environmental investigations and endeavours to collaborate with universities, other research agencies, regional natural resource management groups and various other key stakeholders to improve environmental monitoring, scientific data and support decision making.

The Aquatic Ecosystem Health (AEH) group undertakes a range of aquatic ecosystem monitoring programs. This includes ambient water quality monitoring in Southeast QLD and Moreton Bay, the Great Sandy Straight and many Great Barrier Reef estuaries. The group undertakes an annual freshwater biological survey in Southeast QLD, biannual seagrass depths surveys in Moreton Bay and fish modelling and electrofishing in selected North QLD catchments.

As The Principal Scientist, PO5 You Will
  • Provide high level scientific and strategic advice and information on the results of waterways monitoring and assessment research programs, projects or initiatives to ensure DETSI and other relevant agencies are able to utilise research results, information and data for environmental planning, resource management, infrastructure development and associated purposes.
  • Lead and supervise the development and maintenance of cooperative scientific, technical, business and commercial relationships with key stakeholders (state, national and international public sector, business, scientific and education organisations and the community at large) in relation to waterways assessment and monitoring.
  • Ensure both cost-effective research and development and accurate reporting on critical environmental trends and outcomes relating to waterways monitoring and assessment and associated areas.
  • Represent DETSI at a senior level in complex professional and scientific forums and on inter-departmental and inter-governmental committees in relation to waterways monitoring and assessment research and associated areas and in negotiations with key external organisations involved in these areas.
  • Publish information gained from waterways research, monitoring and assessment that is relevant to and in accordance with DETSI priorities and planning.
  • Manage the financial, capital, intellectual property and human resources of allocated programs, projects or initiatives in clear compliance with relevant policies, priorities and approved practice.
  • Ensure that the conduct of waterways monitoring and assessment research programs, projects or initiatives for which the position is responsible reflects DETSI corporate vision and the capacity to deliver Divisional and Service Area objectives cost-effectively. Additionally, accountability for results, a commitment to continuous improvement, adherence to contemporary 'best practice' human resource management and a team approach to problem ownership, problem-solving and implementation of solutions.
  • Provide management, commitment and support for the effective implementation and ongoing management of WHS Governance policy and procedure, systems, activities and processes within the work unit to fulfil all obligations under the Work Health and Safety Act 2012 and DESI policy and procedures.
  • Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.

We're looking for the best suited applicant for the role. We'll do this by assessing your eligibility and your ability to undertake the requirements of the role (including, where relevant, the way you carried out previous roles).
