Overview

Senior Technician - Environmental Science and Engineering at Kingston Business School. Permanent role within the Faculty of Engineering, Computing & the Environment (ECE), School/Function: Faculty General (ECE). Location: Penrhyn Road. Hours: 37 per week. Note: This is a full time, permanent position focused on providing technical support for Environmental Science and Engineering activities within the Department of Geography, Geology, and the Environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical and teaching support for a diverse range of laboratory-based teaching, from water and soil analysis to geological engineering experiments.
  • Assist with the preparation and setup of practical classes, ensuring all equipment and materials are ready for use.
  • Provide technical support for a range of departmental fieldwork and research activities.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and operate a variety of specialist equipment, including survey instruments, analytical chemistry and geotechnical apparatus.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to staff and students on the use of laboratory and field equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, conducting risk assessments as required.
  • Manage equipment inventories and oversee the procurement of consumables and replacement parts.
  • Collaborate with academic staff to develop innovative practical exercises and support research projects.
  • Forklift driving experience preferable.
The Person – Essential Criteria
  • A science-based degree or/and experience in environmental science or geology or a related field (e.g. chemistry, geochemistry, earth science or similar).
  • Hands-on experience with analytical chemistry, geological and survey equipment, including maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Strong understanding of health and safety regulations in a laboratory and fieldwork context.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise tasks effectively.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to train and support students and staff.
