About the opportunity:
The Department of Customer Service (DCS) is committed to championing the interests and perspectives of NSW citizens to deliver better customer service outcomes. It aims to deliver excellence in customer service, digital leadership and regulatory reform for the people of NSW.
We have some exciting opportunities across two teams for a Policy Officer to join DCS.
Who is the Strategy and Policy Team?
The Strategy and Policy team sits in the Portfolio, Policy and Cabinet Division within the Policy, Strategy and Governance Group in DCS. It is a central policy team responsible for leading strategic reform and providing policy support across a range of DCS priority areas.
Who is the Fair Trading Policy & Delivery Division?
The Policy and Delivery Division sits in the NSW Fair Trading Group in DCS. The branch tackles complex challenges facing citizens and businesses across areas regulated by NSW Fair Trading at a State and National level. Challenges include ensuring consumer protection laws deal effectively with emerging technologies, and ensuring housing sector regulation is fit for purpose especially for vulnerable cohorts.
You will join one of these highly skilled teams providing strategic policy advice to Ministers, the Secretary and senior executives. You will have the opportunity to gain exposure to senior decision-makers and play a role in shaping policy, strategy, and legislation in the DCS portfolio.
In these roles, you will:
- Contribute to strategic policy work with Department or NSW Government wide impacts.
- Work across a diverse range of policy areas.
- Conduct research and analysis on policy issues to support evidence-based decision making.
- Develop proposals for legislative reform and support the implementation of new legislation.
- Prepare Ministerial briefings, Cabinet submissions and policy or strategic advice.
- Contribute to a positive team culture.
This recruitment may also be used to fill other vacancies for Policy Officers.
About You
We are looking for someone with the following skills and experience:
- Strong written and verbal communications skills.
- The ability to manage multiple tasks effectively, meet deadlines and deliver high quality work.
- Adaptability and ability to operate effectively in a complex, sensitive and changing environment, including ability to pick up across new tasks or subject matter quickly.
- Experience developing, implementing or evaluating evidence-based policy.
- Ability and/or experience in writing briefing notes, discussion papers and having input into the development of submissions to the Minister and Cabinet.
- An understanding or experience of how government works, including cabinet, legislative and parliamentary processes.
- Strong research and analytical skills with a strategic, proactive and solutions-focused approach to work.
- A collaborative nature – enjoys working in a team.
