Our welcoming Albury Campus is seeking a Specialist Vision Support Teacher to join them on a full time, permanent basis, commencing in Term
As the Specialist Vision Support Teacher you will provide expert teaching, advice, and resources to ensure students with vision impairment are able to access, engage, and succeed in their learning. The role combines direct student support with capacity building for staff and works in partnership with families and external agencies to foster inclusive education aligned with OSG's Learning to Learn framework and values.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver targeted teaching and support for students with vision impairment, including braille, large print, tactile graphics, and assistive technologies.
- Develop and implement a strategic plan for balancing traditional braille literacy and assistive technologies (e.g., Focus 40, JAWS, text-to-speech), ensuring students build strong braille foundations while progressively gaining skills for participation in the digital world.
- Lead the integration of assistive technologies into teaching and learning, providing training and support for students and staff.
- Provide specialist instruction in Orientation and Mobility (O&M) strategies and reinforce student programs in collaboration with external O&M providers (e.g., NextSense, Guide Dogs Australia).
- Conduct environmental audits of classrooms, learning spaces, specialist areas (e.g., Food Technology), and campuses, providing advice on accessibility, safety, and inclusive participation.
- Support students to navigate OSG's Learning to Learn framework (Assignments, Lessons, Studies, Tutorials), including scaffolding independence, building self-directed learning skills, and guiding students to manage transitions between learning zones.
- Work collaboratively with Campus Principals, classroom teachers, aides, and Student Support teams to design and implement effective adjustments to teaching, learning, and assessment.
- Conduct specialist assessments, contribute to IEPs and DLPs, and provide evidence for NCCD.
- Act as an advocate for students with vision impairment, ensuring their voice and choices are respected in planning and review processes.
- Support key educational transitions (early years into school, primary to secondary, and post-school pathways) through planning and coordination with families, staff, and agencies.
- Provide professional learning for staff on vision impairment, accessibility, inclusive practice, O&M support, assistive technology, braille literacy, and environmental adjustments.
- Support students in building friendships, social participation, and inclusion in the wider school community.
- Liaise with families, carers, and external agencies (e.g., NextSense, Guide Dogs Australia, Orientation & Mobility specialists) to coordinate student support.
- Support student independence in daily routines, including mobility and personal care needs where required, ensuring privacy, dignity, and safety at all times.
- Monitor and evaluate student progress, contributing to regular review meetings and transition planning.
- Uphold and model OSG's ethos, values, and policies in all interactions.
- Current NESA teacher accreditation (or eligibility).
- Qualifications and/or significant experience in the education of students with vision impairment.
- Demonstrated ability to teach braille and/or large print, and to integrate specialist assistive technologies.
- Ability to design and implement a strategic balance between traditional braille literacy and progressive use of assistive technology.
- Specialist knowledge of Orientation and Mobility strategies, including how to apply and reinforce O&M in school contexts.
- Ability to conduct accessibility and environmental audits and provide practical advice for adjustments.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate effectively with staff, families, and agencies.
- Commitment to inclusive education and evidence-based practice.
- Willingness to support students with mobility and personal care needs where required.
- Experience working with students with complex needs in addition to vision impairment.
- Knowledge of NCCD processes and regulatory requirements.
- Experience leading professional learning and mentoring staff.
- Understanding of strategies to promote social connection and peer relationships for students with additional needs.
