ONI's Digital and Data Division is dynamic and growing. We are seeking experienced professionals to fill the Director Data Services role.

The Role

The EL2 Director Data Services, provides strategic leadership and technical oversight in the design, development, and delivery of data services that support ONI in achieving its intelligence objectives.

The role is responsible for driving innovation in data analytics and emerging technologies, and for overseeing the end-to-end management of data and related capabilities in a modern cloud environment. It requires strong collaboration skills, as well as the ability to lead engagements involving both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Experience in leading and managing a small data or software development team is essential.

Operating under broad direction, the EL2 Director Data Services will lead a team of data and software engineering professionals and technical experts, including both APS staff and contractors. The role ensures ONI effectively leverages and manages its data and analytical capabilities as strategic assets to enable evidence-based decision-making, improve service delivery, and enhance outcomes.

Success in this role requires a strategic thinker with strong technical acumen, proven budget and contract management experience, exceptional leadership skills, and the ability to drive cultural change toward a data-driven organisation.

  • Ability to set a clear vision for data and analytical services that align with organisational intelligence objectives and drive long-term value.
    Knowledge of modern data architectures, cloud platforms, and emerging technologies.
    Proven ability to drive innovation, adopt new technologies, and lead digital and cultural transformation toward a data-driven organisation.
    Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to lead engagements with diverse technical and non-technical stakeholders.
    Experience in managing and developing high-performing, multidisciplinary teams, including APS staff and contractors.
    Demonstrated capability in managing budgets, contracts, and resources across complex technical programs.
    Understanding of data governance, security, and ethical considerations, particularly in sensitive or intelligence contexts.
    Strong results orientation, with a track record of enabling evidence-based decision-making and improving service delivery through data.
    Knowledge of relevant Australian government legislation, policies, and frameworks pertaining to data management, privacy, security, and public sector governance (desirable).
Skills and Qualifications

Desirable but not essential:

  • Relevant professional experience to related to the role.

    Relevant tertiary qualifications in the following disciplines are highly desirable, but not essential:Information Technology, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related quantitative discipline.
    Ability to obtain and maintain a NV1/TSPV security clearance
    Understanding of data governance, data security, and data privacy principles.
    Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    Proven ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear and concise language for non-technical audiences.
    Understanding of Australia's strategic environment and government priorities.
