About the company :

Our client, a State Government organisation, is seeking TO2 Fisheries Technicians for a casual full-time position until 30 September 2026, with potential for extension.

As a Fisheries Officer, you will undertake general technical duties, including measuring and processing fish samples caught commercially and recreationally, processing fish otoliths, and estimating fish age to support stock assessments and fishery management.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in sample and data collection from Queensland's fisheries following established protocols.
  • Processing fish samples in the field and laboratory, including measuring, sexing, removing otoliths, and collecting tissue samples for genetic analysis.
  • Preparing otoliths for examination, including embedding, sectioning, and mounting on slides.
  • Estimating fish age by reading otoliths.
  • Communicating effectively with team members and stakeholders regarding sampling activities.
  • Maintaining high scientific standards during data collection while respecting stakeholder sensitivities.
  • Sharing relevant information with supervisors and colleagues appropriately.
  • Supporting other Fisheries Queensland activities as required.
  • Performing other technical duties as needed.

Essential requirements:

  • Associate Diploma in Science, Applied Science, or Rural Science, or equivalent qualification.
  • Current Queensland 'C' class driver's license.
  • Willingness to travel for up to a week at a time.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Adherence to procedures during office, lab, and field work.
  • Attention to detail and pride in work.
  • Ability to follow sampling protocols and safety procedures.
  • Ability to produce detailed trip reports.
  • Effective communication of stakeholder information.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and order in labs and equipment.

Highly desirable skills and experience:

  • Experience in fisheries surveys and scientific data collection.
  • Proficiency with Office 365 applications.
  • Ability to identify target and non-target species.
  • Knowledge of Queensland's commercial and recreational fisheries.
  • Current first aid certification (preferred).
  • Shipboard safety training (preferred).
