EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Full-Time

An opportunity has become available for a Plant Breeding Technician to provide assistance to the Variety Development Manager, by undertaking a range of technical duties.

ABOUT THE ROLE

An opportunity has become available for a Plant Breeding Technician to provide assistance to the Variety Development Manager, by undertaking a range of technical duties. These duties require a basic understanding of relevant scientific principles and processes, with on-the-job training and development in aspects of the selection program and propagation activities. Specifically, the role is required to:

• Work in a team environment, accepting responsibility for specific components of the breeding and selection program.

• Organise field trials, including planting, maintenance and harvesting.

• Collect field data, collate and enter into variety improvement database.

• Assist other technicians with other field activities as required.

• Supervise casual labourers as required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

YOUR REQUIREMENTS

Essential

• Professional experience within the agricultural industry (sugarcane industry highly regarded)

• Experience with crop field work (planting, sampling and harvesting trials) or similar, and scientific data collection).

• General understanding of scientific trial design and statistical analysis.

• High level of competence in recording and maintaining accurate records.

• Demonstrated ability to supervise field workers and to plan and coordinate a team of field workers for all breeding activities including sampling, planting and harvesting all field trials.

• High level of motivation and initiative with excellent planning and organization skills, and ability to manage competing priorities.

Desirable

• Experience with sugarcane varieties

• Computer skills associated with data entry and checking

• Experience with agricultural machinery

Essential qualifications

• Tertiary qualification in agriculture or equivalent field

• A current driver's licence is required to drive SRA vehicles
