Skills and Experiences:

The Role

The Research Assistant (Neurostimulation) plays a key role in supporting projects as part of a multidisciplinary team of Researchers and Clinicians in the area of mental health, investigating novel treatments (e.g., Ketamine, Psychedelics, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, transcranial Direct Current Stimulation) for depression and other mental health conditions.

This position sits within the Sydney Neurostimulation Centre (SyNC) at the Black Dog Institute and is responsible for providing research, technical and clinical assistance to senior staff. The position works collaboratively with the broader team in neurostimulation and interventional psychiatry, assisting in the development and application of knowledge in the field of mental health to a range of projects conducted by the team.

Duties & Responsibilities

Research Procedures
  • Assist in coordination, conduct and set-up of new and existing research projects (including but not limited to preparation of ethics submissions and study materials; project reports).
  • Liaise with research collaborators, internal and external stakeholders with regard to project implementation and administration (including but not limited project initiation, monitoring, progress).
  • Assist in delivery of study processes according to research protocols.
  • Assist in conduct of research procedures appropriate to level of training.
  • Assist in data collection/entry, management and analysis of study results.
  • Assist in preparation of manuscripts for publication including literature searches/reviews, formatting and journal submissions.
  • Ensure all project related manuscripts, presentations etc. are prepared within agreed time frames.

Clinic Procedures
  • Maintain and regularly update records/database.
  • Communicate with all patients and clients of the relevant BDI clinics in a professional manner.
  • Provide excellent care and timely response to issues as they arise.
  • In consultation with team clinicians, ensure appropriate follow up/resolution of clinical issues, incidents and developments.
  • If required, assist in delivery of treatment procedures (e.g., transcranial magnetic stimulation, transcranial direct current stimulation, ketamine) appropriate to level of credentialling.

Administration
  • Ensure all research and clinic procedures are in compliance with applicable protocols and policies/guidelines.
  • Attend to and manage enquiries.
  • Ensure research lab and clinic rooms are in presentable order.

Work, Health and Safety
  • Comply with all WHS legislation and WHS Policy and Procedures.
  • Report any WHS hazards and significant issues to Head of Operations, People & Culture or delegate.

Selection Criteria

Essential Criteria
  • Demonstrated capacity to conduct research as evidenced by involvement in other research projects, peer reviewed publications, and/or experience of data entry/collection and participant interviews.
  • Proven effective record keeping skills (both paper and electronic), including the ability to work accurately and with attention to detail
  • Exceptional interpersonal, oral and written communication skills including the ability to liaise with a diverse group of people.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal direction, show initiative and work effectively as a member of a team.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills; ability to multi- task and prioritise.
  • Strong computing skills with Microsoft Office and data/statistical software.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to health and safety.

Desirable Criteria
  • Experience with REDCap (e.g., including instrument design, administration of surveys, report generation, setting up alerts/notifications, eConsent, data quality module)
  • Experience with neurostimulation techniques (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation; transcranial Direct Current Stimulation)
  • Experience with electroencephalogram (EEG) procedures
