The DNA Management Section is part of the Forensic Services Group (FSG), Operations Support Command and is responsible for the operational and administrative activities to ensure that efficient and effective DNA management services are provided to the QPS and other agencies.

The section liaises closely with Forensic Science Queensland (FSQ) who provide most of the DNA analytical services for the QPS.

Your Key Accountabilities

The core capability requirements for this role are:

  • Manage and review processes by liaison with senior investigators and DNA laboratory management to ensure investigative outcomes are achieved by prioritisation and allocation of available DNA testing resources.
  • Lead, manage and actively participate in research, analysis and development of forensic examination strategies, with specific focus on available forensic science advancement opportunities in DNA testing.
  • Undertake action to resolve complex issues with DNA processes to finalise forensic investigations and support vulnerable victims in a professional and efficient manner.
  • Prepare and provide authoritative, strategic and operational written and oral advice to relevant internal stakeholders on the use of DNA evidence.
  • Establish and maintain productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to identify forensic evidence pertaining to major crime investigations as cited by the DNA Commission of Inquiry.
  • Communicate, consult, negotiate and resolve conflicts effectively with all levels of internal and external stakeholders to ensure consideration of issues and delivery of positive outcomes for the service.
  • Mentor, support, monitor and train staff in relation to establishment of work priorities and adherence to legislation, policies and procedures in relation to DNA testing, sample retention and sample destruction.

Role Requirements

Technical/ Operational/ Educational experience
  • Experience as a forensic officer or criminal investigator is highly desirable.

Other
  • This is a temporary position until 30 June 2026, with the possibility of extension. If selected, public service officers from other agencies will be seconded for the period concerned, subject to agreement and release by the home agency.
  • The successful applicant/s will be required to undergo psychometric assessment, prior to appointment.
  • Applicants are advised they may be exposed to material (written, visual and audio) of a graphic and sensitive nature.
  • The successful applicant/s will be required to work within QPS Headquarters, Brisbane and FSQ, Coopers Plains.

Applications to remain current for 12 months.
