Within Defence Security Operations Centre (DSOC), the Assistant Director Cyber Security Operations - Defend is responsible for managing Threat Hunt, Detection Engineering, and Automation capabilities for Defence systems. They will collaborate with the broader Security Operations Centre to ensure effective security for Defence's systems. The role requires obtaining and maintaining a Positive Vetting clearance.

Duties include :
  • Managing and providing subject matter expertise to technical cyber security teams;
  • Overseeing planning and execution of Hunt operations;
  • Managing and prioritising detection development across Defence's complex cyber terrain;
  • Identifying opportunities and overseeing automation development to increase visibility and reduce analyst response times;
  • Leading complex problem-solving and coordination activities for operational outcomes;
  • Building team capability through coaching, feedback, and mentoring to enhance resiliency and technical skills in a multidisciplinary team.

This role is eligible for a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP), a premium in addition to the base salary, recognizing positions critical to Defence capability. For more details, contact the designated officer.

Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate will be :

  • A proven leader with strong communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills to work effectively with stakeholders and understand threats to Defence, enabling decision-making;
  • Experienced in leading cyber security operations teams or similar high-tempo operational roles, preferably with hunt or cyber security-engineering team management experience;
  • A pragmatic self-starter comfortable with ambiguity, adaptable in achieving outcomes, and capable of managing competing priorities accurately;
  • Possessing well-developed analytical skills;
  • Experienced in stakeholder engagement, with confident and persuasive communication skills to explain complex concepts and risks clearly;
  • Able to engage with executive leadership up to Band 3 / 3 Star levels;
  • Experienced in managing multi-disciplinary teams;
  • Skilled in empowering teams through setting performance standards, providing feedback, and supporting shared missions.
