About The Opportunity

NSW Health Pathology Maitland is seeking potential Medical Laboratory Technician's to join the dynamic team of multidisciplinary technical staff who are servicing the needs of the diverse and rapidly growing Hunter Valley region. This is an opportunity for any eligible technical officers to be placed on a waiting list for any future vacancies.

The Maitland Laboratory forms part of the public pathology network and consists of approximately 22 staff of varying grades. The New Maitland Hospital in Metford opened its doors in January 2022. This modern, purpose-built laboratory has space for future growth and beautiful views. Being part of a growing community, but still in close proximity to Newcastle, will see the area grow and expand and provide exciting opportunities within the laboratory space. With the expansion of the hospital and the increase in beds and outpatient services, the demand on fast, accurate and high standard of service delivery is paramount in building the already well-developed relationship the laboratory staff has with the stakeholders. What You'll Be Doing

The Maitland laboratory operates 24 hours and performs a range of laboratory investigations by applying established methods and procedures. As a multidisciplinary laboratory there is a requirement to perform front-end activities in specimen reception, some data entry during afternoon shifts and laboratory testing in the following departments: biochemistry, haematology and immunohaematology. Other responsibilities include analyser maintenance, quality control and activities as directed by senior staff to ensure ongoing compliance with NATA accreditation.

  • Minimum qualification of Diploma in Laboratory Technology or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution with subjects relevant to pathology or medical laboratory operations
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the delivery of pathology services within a discipline relevant to the department, including use of Laboratory Information Systems, Patient Systems and Quality Systems
  • Ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner and to manage competing priorities to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment whilst working autonomously to deliver results within specified timeframes set to meet client expectations
  • Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers and patients as well as clinical laboratory staff
  • Display initiative, problem solving and analytical skills including an ability to apply established principles in a pathology laboratory and investigate and resolve general and complex issues within the laboratory environment
  • Commitment to the principles of quality management and continuous quality improvement and to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities
