Founder of Global Nomadic & Foxman FramesWe offer a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the vibrant culture and rich biodiversity of the Ecuadorian Amazon.
This program provides an in-depth understanding of medicinal plants in traditional medicine and their role in addressing local health concerns. You will collaborate with healthcare providers, specialists, and local healers, learning about their customs and the importance of their work in preserving their culture.
You will learn about traditional medicinal plants used by the Kichwa people of Amazonian Ecuador, exploring how these plants reflect local epidemiological concerns and pharmacopoeias. The program also covers cultivating medicinal plants in home gardens and understanding knowledge determinants within the indigenous Shuar and mestizo communities.
Participants will contribute to projects supporting local medicine men and healers in disseminating information and maintaining cultural heritage. Activities include working on agroforestry farms, cultivating medicinal plants, and conducting plant inventories, providing practical experience and community impact.
Living with local host families allows full cultural immersion and the chance to build lasting relationships. This experience broadens understanding of ethnobotany, traditional medicine, and the connection between culture, health, and the environment.
The Experience
As an intern, expect a comprehensive daily schedule of hands-on activities, collaboration with healers, and cultural exchanges. Mornings are spent on agroforestry farms learning about medicinal plants, followed by afternoons dedicated to research or engaging with healers.
Evenings and weekends offer cultural activities such as sports, teaching English, or exploring local attractions. Spending time with host families enhances cultural understanding and personal growth.
