Overview

VRH Dandenong is a multi-disciplinary specialist referral and emergency hospital. Our hospital houses Emergency & Critical Care, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Radiology and Anaesthesia. While each department has a core team, we collaborate to achieve optimal patient outcomes. The Medicine team currently comprises 5 Medics and 7 nurses, and we are looking for an experienced Medicine Nurse to join our cohesive and supportive team. We pride ourselves on teaching the next generation and sharing our expertise with the wider veterinary community. The hospital has established relationships with educational institutes, hosting visiting veterinarians and students. This role can be full-time or part-time and provides training and support to help you transition from another specialty or from Emergency and Critical Care into Internal Medicine.



Responsibilities
  • Deliver a high standard of compassionate care to both patients and clients
  • Plan and schedule daily activities
  • Caring for hospitalised patients and recovering patients after procedures
  • Prepare, facilitate and monitor procedures
  • Assist with anaesthesia planning, facilitation and monitoring
  • Prepare patients for procedures
  • Maintain a clean and hygienic hospital environment
  • Assist with consultations
  • Handover of patients between shifts


Qualifications
  • Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, Bachelor of Veterinary Nursing or equivalent
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience working as a veterinary nurse; specialty experience preferred but training can be provided
  • Strong technical nursing skills, including IV catheter placement, blood sampling, transfusions, feeding tube maintenance, central line care, endoscope setup and care
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medication dosage, calculations and administration
  • Excellent anesthesia and monitoring skills and willingness to learn from our Anesthesia team
  • Knowledge of RxWorks and SmartFlow are desirable but not essential
  • Have a good general nursing knowledge base
  • Open to learning and receptive to feedback
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to remain calm and focused during high-pressure situations and adapt to changing situations
  • A positive, flexible, enthusiastic attitude
  • Proven ability to problem solve
  • Maintain a high level of attention to detail
  • Have the ability to work closely within a team and autonomously
  • A genuine passion for providing exceptional care to animals, their owners and referring vets
