About the role

The primary objective of the Telematics Device Resilience Engineer is to identify, investigate, and resolve complex technical issues across Directed's telematics devices and cloud platform, ensuring robust system performance, accuracy of telemetry data and rapid support response for customers. Acting as a bridge between firmware engineering and operational support, this Level 2 engineering role leads root cause analysis, failure triage, and on-bench validation, contributing directly to system robustness and continuous improvement. The engineer ensures that device-related issues are not only addressed swiftly but also inform better design, firmware, and operational practices over time.

Our Hardware Engineering Team plays a pivotal role in designing and developing advanced hardware systems that meet stringent automotive manufacturer requirements. The team is committed to delivering high-quality, reliable, and high-performance solutions that integrate seamlessly into complex vehicle platforms. Externally, they work closely with OEM partners, suppliers, and regulatory bodies to align product designs with market demands and industry standards. How you will make an impact

This role is critical to maintaining and improving the reliability and accuracy of telemetry data, device and system resilience, and delivering a responsive, high-quality support of customer-facing incidents. This role will see you manage:

  • Device Resilience & Fault Tolerance: Championing the design and continuous improvement of telematics device performance in the field, with a focus on robustness in varying electrical, thermal, and environmental conditions.
  • Failure Mode Analysis & Debugging: Diagnosing and reproducing complex bugs and field failures through data log analysis, bench simulations, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • End-to-End System Monitoring: Collaborating with firmware and DevOps teams to track health, detect anomalies, and prevent downtime using data dashboards and fleet-wide insights.
  • Customer advocacy through reliability: Ensuring customer-facing reliability through proactive detection, root cause resolution, and field validation of firmware and hardware fixes.
  • Support enablement: Building the organisation's resilience capabilities by sharing investigations, training Level 1 Operations support staff on diagnostics workflows and tools.
  • Testing: Test device functionality across a wide range of vehicles and usage scenarios including troubleshooting integration issues during product development and testing phases.

The successful candidate

Our ideal candidate for the Telematics Device Resilience Engineer role will confidently demonstrate:

  • 10+ years' experience in a similar role working within telematics and automotive electronic systems.
  • Experience investigating and resolving complex field issues involving hardware, firmware and system integration.
  • Having worked closely with cross-functional teams including hardware engineers, software engineers and customer service professionals.
  • Proficiency in analysing CAN bus, TCP/IP data, GNSS logs and using AT commands.
  • Using tools for data analysis and basic scripting (e.g. SQL and Python).
  • Familiarity with ticket systems, diagnostic workflows and bench testing environments.
