JUNIOR ENVIRONMENTAL & RISK OFFICER

Location: Howick

Our client in Howick is seeking a Junior Environmental & Risk Officer to support sustainability initiatives and ensure full SHER (Safety, Health, Environment & Risk) compliance.

Key responsibilities include adhering to the Occupational Health & Safety Act, implementing risk control measures, developing environmental policies, and managing SHER systems and reporting.

Duties & Responsibilities

Minimum Requirements :

  • At least 3 years of relevant experience.
  • NDip / Degree in Environmental Management Sciences.
  • SAMTRAC qualification (advantageous).
  • Minimum of 3 years experience as an Environmental & Risk Officer.
  • Experience in implementing ISO 14001:2015 & ISO 45001 standards.
  • Extensive knowledge of ISO 14001:2015, NEMA, OHSA, and other environmental standards.

Responsibilities :

  • Report, investigate, and address all incidents related to SHER, and disseminate lessons learned.
  • Ensure all environmental authorizations, operating licenses, and permits are current and compliance is maintained.
  • Maintain compliance with all applicable SHER legislation and standards.
  • Monitor SHER performance through data collection and reporting.
  • Ensure legal appointments are in place as per legislation.
  • Develop and oversee occupational health management and monitoring programs.
  • Manage site surveys, audits, and assessments related to SHER.
  • Promote a safety and environmental culture through awareness, communication, and training initiatives.
  • Coordinate all SHER-related training programs.
  • Assess and improve the site's sustainability performance, focusing on energy efficiency, resource recovery, waste reduction, and operational efficiencies.
  • Develop plans to prevent pollution, respond to emergencies, and ensure business continuity.
  • Ensure adherence to system protocols, policies, and procedures.
  • Review SOPs for operational excellence and compliance.
  • Prepare audit reports, identify non-conformities, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Monitor the implementation of corrective measures.
  • Maintain positive relations with internal and external stakeholders, including contractors.
  • Collaborate on initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint, GHG emissions, and other environmental impacts.
  • Propose SHER improvements, corrective actions, and resource requirements, along with implementation plans for NCRs.
