The Opportunity: We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Research Assistant to join the Stafford Fox Drug Discovery Facility within the MCRI Stem Cell Medicine Theme. This is an exciting role that involves contributing to high content and high throughput drug screening activities using cutting-edge technologies.

In This Position, You Will:
  • Contribute to assay development, phenotypic drug screening, and hit validation using human stem cell-derived cells and organoids.
  • Operationalise new and existing workflows for automated liquid handling robots and confocal imaging.
  • Work closely with senior team members during automation development and drug screening activities.
  • Prepare laboratory SOPs, culture cell lines, and maintain cell stocks.
  • Handle ordering reagents, keeping electronic inventories and records up to date, and preparing reports.

You'll be an essential part of the team supporting biomedical research activities and helping to accelerate our understanding of disease mechanisms and potential therapies.

About Your New Team:

Our Stem Cell Medicine Theme is dedicated to using advanced stem cell technologies to drive discoveries in stem cell biology and apply these insights to medical outcomes. We are focused on understanding the causes of childhood diseases, screening for new treatments, and advancing regenerative medicine. Our team's expertise spans stem cells, gene editing, transcriptomics, phosphoproteomics, and bioengineering to model complex diseases and develop stem cell-based therapies.

This position also offers the exciting opportunity to participate in The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Stem Cell Medicine (reNEW), an international research consortium with members from University of Copenhagen (Denmark), Leiden University Medical Centre (The Netherlands), and Murdoch Children's Research Institute (Australia).

Your Responsibilities Include:
  • Contribute to pre-clinical cell-based drug discovery research projects.
  • Assist in the development and validation of assays for cell-based phenotypic screening and their transfer to robotic systems for high throughput screening.
  • Assist in the development and testing of automation procedures (liquid handling, drug dispensing and imaging).
  • Assist on executing high throughput primary and secondary screening drug screens and generation of high-quality screening data.
  • Assist in the training of internal and external users on equipment usage, data visualisation and basic analysis.
  • Develop and effectively apply a broad spectrum of practical laboratory skills; including molecular biology, cell culture, biochemistry, assay development, and the use of automated equipment.
What We Need From You:
  • Degree/Honours/Masters qualification in Science or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Excellent time management, organisational and analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with automation, including liquid handling, image acquisition and image analysis.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience using image analysis software (e.g., Cell Profiler, Fiji, ImageJ).
