The Department of Youth Justice and Victim Support has an exciting opportunity to join our Strategy and Policy team where you will play a key role in keeping Queensland communities safe.

We are actively tackling the complex causes of youth crime and addressing serious repeat offenders and ensuring our systems and services not only meet but anticipate the needs of victims.

Youth Justice Strategy and Policy is a high performing team within Strategy and Performance, responsible for leading major strategy, policy and legislative reforms that addresses offending behaviour and delivers better services to children, young people, and families in Queensland.

  • Providing early intervention, statutory Youth Justice, and detention services to ensure that young people are held accountable for their offending behaviour. We help support them to become responsible members of the community.
  • Providing trauma-informed support and resources to victims to ensure they can recover and heal, whilst ensuring the voices and experiences of victims are heard and respected.

Our programs and community partnerships preserve cultural connections for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to achieve positive life outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

As Director, you will specifically:

  • Demonstrate cultural capability and/or a commitment to developing cultural capability to ensure an inclusive culture that aligns with the Human Rights Act 2019 and supports departmental programs and community partnerships aimed at preserving cultural connections for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Identify, research, develop and analyse complex policy options and provide high level policy and legislative advice to the Senior Executive Director, Deputy Director General, Director-General and Minister
  • Prepare papers, submissions, briefs, memoranda and letters for the Senior Executive Director, Deputy Director-General, Director-General and Minister on complex policy, strategic issues.
  • Contribute to a dynamic and creative team environment focused on generating and actioning innovative ideas.
  • Represent the department at a senior level as required, including at interdepartmental and intergovernmental meetings and associated management committees.
  • Manage the human, financial and operational resources of the work unit to ensure the achievement of strategic and business objectives.
  • Develop and advise on strategic directions and planning priorities and contribute to setting the strategic agenda for the Department of Youth Justice and Victim Support.
  • Drive the departmental vision, goals and values and proactively lead and manage in a style consistent with the vision, values and priorities of the Department of Youth Justice and Victim Support.
