The Magistrates' Court of Victoria (MCV) is the first level of the Victorian court system and handles over 300,000 cases annually across 51 locations, representing about 90% of all cases in Victorian courts. The Court aims to be innovative, accessible, and responsive, providing quality services to the Victorian community.

About the role

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Family Violence Applicant Practitioner (FVAP) to join the family violence team at the Magistrates' Court of Victoria. This role supports the Court's response to family violence, working alongside the Family Violence Registrar (FVR) and Family Violence Respondent Practitioner (FVRP) to provide non-legal support and safety planning for individuals attending court.

The FVAP conducts risk assessments, develops safety plans, facilitates referrals to community-based services, liaises with legal professionals, police, and support services, and may provide information to Magistrates in court.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Conduct risk assessments and develop safety plans for individuals experiencing family violence.
  2. Provide non-legal information and referrals to support services, counseling, and case management.
  3. Consider the needs of children and make appropriate referrals to child protection services.
  4. Liaise with internal and external stakeholders including legal services, police, and court staff.
  5. Maintain accurate and confidential client records, ensuring compliance with privacy and consent protocols.
  6. Represent the Court at stakeholder meetings and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  7. Prepare reports and contribute to education and training for internal and external services.

About you

  • Passionate about supporting people experiencing family violence
  • Effective engagement skills and experience in risk assessments
  • Experience in providing support, safety planning, and referrals within family violence services
  • Understanding of the Family Violence Protection Act 2008, risk assessment frameworks, and court procedures
  • Tertiary qualifications in social work, psychology, social sciences, or related fields (highly desirable)
  • Experience with diverse communities and understanding of intersectionality (desirable)
