Associate Professor in Oceanography – University of Queensland

The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences

The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences (SEES) is a vibrant, multidisciplinary school with extensive teaching and research programs covering Geology, Geophysics, Geography, Environmental Science and Management, Occupational Health and Safety Sciences, and Urban and Regional Planning.

Our interconnected teams of earth, environmental, and social scientists, environmental management specialists, health and safety experts, and urban planners work together to address global challenges such as climate change, urbanisation, food security, conservation, and natural resource management. Researchers, teachers, and students from around the world are attracted to our vibrant academic environment at UQ's St Lucia campus.

UQ's research excellence in earth and environmental sciences is world-renowned, reflected in high global rankings, successful grants, and high-quality publications.

SEES hosts world-class research facilities, including a Centre for Geoanalytical Mass Spectrometry, and has access to unique fieldwork locations in Australia and abroad, such as UQ marine research stations at Heron Island and Moreton Bay. SEES is also involved in the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) through ANZIC.

The role

UQ has an established biological oceanography program. SEES aims to expand activities in oceanography, both to complement existing work and to develop new links into earth and environmental sciences. We seek to expand our program in oceanography and marine geology through the appointment of a high-caliber individual to generate new research and teaching directions in chemical or physical oceanography.

We are seeking to fill a position in physical/chemical oceanography, paleoceanography, or marine geology at the Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor level. The role is a Teaching and Research (T&R) position, requiring teaching, research, service, and engagement duties. The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop an independent research program.

The person

Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent in a relevant field of physical/chemical oceanography, paleoceanography, or marine geology. Evidence of effective teaching practices and the ability to deliver high-quality teaching outcomes are essential. A strong research record with peer-reviewed publications and success in attracting research funding is required.

The ability to establish effective relationships and promote the discipline at university and community levels, including industry, government, and professional bodies, is important. Appointment level within B-D will depend on the individual's track record and experience.

Accessibility requirements can be addressed through the contact person listed in the advertisement.

Remuneration

This full-time, continuing appointment is at Academic levels B-D, with a superannuation contribution of up to 17%. Salary ranges are:
