NSW Health Pathology are currently seeking a permanent full time Senior Hospital Scientist in Charge of Section to lead the Virology Section in the Microbiology Laboratory at Westmead Hospital. What you will be doing

Responsible for the management of scientific, technical and support staff, all testing and associated activities and logistics for the Virology Section in the Microbiology Laboratory - NSWHP, Westmead Hospital. The position oversees the quality, cost and operational integrity of the Section, regulatory compliance and accreditation of laboratory services in the Section, human resource, business and resource management.

Bachelor Degree or higher degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification, with subjects relevant to pathology, microbiology and virology/molecular microbiology from a recognised tertiary institutionCustomer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers, patients and clinical and laboratory staff, along with report writing skills, statistical evaluation of scientific data and the ability to effectively communicate policies and proceduresDemonstrated understanding and knowledge of accreditation frameworks, relevant standards and quality systemsDemonstrated managerial skills with experience in laboratory operations, administration and budgetingAdvanced knowledge of Pathology Laboratory Information Systems including supervision of e-based Quality Management SystemsExtensive high level knowledge of working within the relevant section of the laboratory with knowledge of the operation and maintenance of analytical equipment in a pathology laboratorySound understanding of legislation, policies and requirements that impact the laboratory environment including work health and safety and privacy requirementsAdvanced knowledge, skills and experience in virology and molecular biology, including but not limited to quality control systems and data analysis, cell culture systems methods and techniques and whole genome sequencing, with demonstrated ability to develop, scientifically evaluate and implement new virological diagnostic assays or processes.
