This newly created position is part of a two-year pilot program designed to demonstrate the benefits of incorporating exercise physiology into the care of children and young people undergoing oncology treatment, as well as during their recovery in the months that follow.
The role involves conducting assessments and delivering interventions across a variety of settings, including inpatient wards, the paediatric oncology day unit, community environments such as family homes, and via telehealth. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team—particularly Paediatric Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Social Workers, medical staff, and nursing staff within the Oncology Service. As part of the HNEKids Allied Health service, you will provide assessments, interventions, and care plans for patients of the John Hunter Children's Hospital Oncology Service. The Allied Health team is a dedicated group of skilled professionals committed to evidence-based practice and ensuring that the goals of each child and family remain at the centre of care. This position reports to the Director of Allied Health and provides orientation, shadowing opportunities, and ongoing clinical supervision. The service promotes ongoing professional development for all clinicians.
ResponsibilitiesBelow are responsibilities associated with this role:
- Conduct assessments and deliver interventions across inpatient wards, paediatric oncology day unit, community settings, and via telehealth.

- Establish and contribute to the new service as part of a two-year pilot project, including involvement in research and data analysis to evaluate the impact of an Exercise Physiologist within Paediatric Oncology.
- Engage with families to set meaningful and achievable goals and to support children and young people at varying stages of treatment and distress.
You are a motivated clinician with the initiative to drive this two-year pilot project, combining direct intervention with research and data analysis to evaluate the impact of an Exercise Physiologist within Paediatric Oncology. You bring strong communication and adaptability, enabling you to engage effectively with children and young people at varying stages of treatment and distress, while also working collaboratively with families to establish meaningful and achievable goals.
