As a Project Officer at the Centre for Pathogen Genomics and Microbiological Diagnostic Unit Public Health Laboratory (MDU PHL), you'll play a crucial role in developing and implementing innovative programs in microbiology and pathogen genomics. You'll have the opportunity to work with world-leading experts, coordinating complex projects that span across the Asia-Pacific region. Your efforts will directly contribute to advancing infectious disease surveillance, research, and capacity building in this critical field.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Manage Complex Projects: Coordinate multidisciplinary teams and international partners to deliver large-scale research and public health initiatives.
- Drive Strategic Objectives: Monitor progress and ensure the achievement of the Centre's and MDU PHL's goals through workplan development, progress reviews, and activity coordination.
- Facilitate Stakeholder Engagement: Liaise with diverse stakeholders, including university departments, research institutions, laboratories, and funding agencies, to ensure successful project outcomes.
- Oversee Communications: Develop and implement communication plans, manage website content, and coordinate social media strategies to disseminate project activities and findings.
You may be a great fit if:
You are a highly organised and proactive professional with a background in public health, global health, or pathogen genomics, possessing excellent project management skills and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
You may also:
- Hold a tertiary qualification in public health, global health, pathogen genomics, or a related field.
- Have demonstrated experience in project management and stakeholder engagement.
- Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Be able to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
- Have excellent organisational skills with a high attention to detail.
- Demonstrate problem-solving abilities and analytical skills.
- Be proficient in Microsoft Office suite and other relevant software applications.

Your new team - The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity
The Doherty Institute is a world-class institute combining research, teaching, public health and reference laboratory services, diagnostic services and clinical care into infectious diseases and immunity. It was officially opened in September 2014 and is a joint venture between the University of Melbourne and Melbourne Health. The Doherty Institute has a major focus on diseases that pose serious public and global health threats such as influenza, tuberculosis, HIV, viral hepatitis, Ebola and drug resistant bacteria. The Doherty's activities are multi-disciplinary and cross-sectoral, placing great emphasis on translational research and improving clinical outcomes. Teams of scientists, clinicians and epidemiologists collaborate on a wide spectrum of activities - from basic immunology and discovery research, to the development of new vaccines and new preventative and treatment methods, to surveillance and investigation of disease outbreaks.
