Talent Insights is working with a federal government agency on the lookout for a Senior Data Scientist with strong experience in Python and R

The successful candidates will bring technical capability, a strong grounding in data science and statistical programming, and the ability to engage with stakeholders and communicate findings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Extract, cleanse, and transform data from multiple sources (e.g., data warehouse), and apply data reasonableness checks.
  • Develop and update regular performance monitoring reports and conduct technical reviews.
  • Contribute to statutory reporting obligations including data preparation for reporting to the board, the minister, and public dashboards.
  • Apply statistical and mathematical modelling techniques, such as scheme projection models, predictive modelling, and scenario testing.
  • Conduct policy costings, deep dives, and risk assessments to support data-led policy development.
  • Provide verbal and written updates to staff and leadership on progress and outcomes.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to understand analytical needs and translate them into technical deliverables.
  • Perform ad hoc modelling and data analysis tasks as required.
  • Demonstrated experience in engaging with internal stakeholders to gather requirements and deliver analytical outputs.
  • Proficiency in R or Python for data manipulation, analysis, and visualisation.
  • Proficiency in SQL or SAS for querying and working with structured datasets.
  • Tertiary qualifications in mathematics, statistics, data science, or a related quantitative field.
  • Understanding and application experience of statistical modeling techniques such as Generalised Linear Models (GLMs) or machine learning approaches such as gradient boosting.
  • Experience in using data analytics to support government policy development, with exposure to government processes (e.g., budget cycles, legislation, ministerial briefings, or policy submissions).
