ABOUT THE ROLE :

AWX is seeking Field Assistants to join the National Fire Ant Eradication Program to help eradicate the invasive species.

ROLE INFORMATION & REQUIREMENTS :

  • Pay Rate : $34.65 per hour
  • Role location : Caboolture
  • Start date : Intakes in February and March. 6-month contract with the possibility of extension or relocation to another depot.
  • MUST have a valid driver's licence (Open preferred).
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment functional assessment and drug & alcohol testing.
  • A sound level of computer skills and literacy.
  • Customer service background advantageous.
  • Able to work a 9-day fortnight, Monday to Friday, with every 2nd Monday off (average of 76 hours in the fortnight).
  • Hours of work : Start times between 6:30 am and 7:00 am depending on the time of year and team allocation. Finish times between 3:30 pm and 4:00 pm.
  • If successful, there will be a 1-day paid induction based at Caboolture.
  • We supply PPE for this role: 3 shirts, 3 pants, and a wide-brim hat.

DUTY DESCRIPTIONS :

The season's transfer between Treatment (warmer months) and Surveillance (July to September) due to fire ants not foraging once ground temperature drops below 18°C.

Treatment Duties :

  • Walking up to 15 km per day across various terrains to spread bait for invasive species.
  • Carrying a hand spreader (1-2 kg including bait) in the left hand and turning a crank with the right hand to distribute bait. Support extends from wrist to elbow to distribute weight evenly.
  • 30 to 60 minutes of vehicle travel from the depot to work sites, with driving rotations.

Surveillance Duties :

  • Walking slowly up to 15 km per day across various terrains to search for infestations (nests).
  • Carrying a light pointer (less than 500g) in either hand to poke at the ground.
  • Manually collecting suspect ants.
  • 30 to 60 minutes of vehicle travel from the depot to work sites, with driving rotations.
  • Exposure to outdoor temperature ranges and climatic conditions in south east Queensland.

Field-Based Administrative Duties :

  • Resident liaison (door knocking, telephone calls)
  • Paperwork
