Overview

The role

We are looking for an enthusiastic person to join our Integrated Workforce team, which works in the Eastern Valleys area within South East Wales. You will be based at our Cilfynydd Depot near Pontypridd. This role carries an emergency incident callout role for flooding incidents, so applicants should live within 45 minutes reach of the Cilfynydd depot, post code CF37 4NE.

This is a physically active, predominantly outdoor role. You will work in all weathers and frequently in challenging, remote locations alongside a small team of 2-4 colleagues. As a key member of the team, you will operate a variety of hand tools, such as hooks and scythes, and powered tools such as chainsaws, strimmers and pole saws, plus other specialized plant such as a robo-mower and woodchipper. You will also fulfil the important role of a banksman by supervising the safe movement of plant on a site.

Given the nature and location of our work, we are looking for someone who is self-motivated, safety-conscious, confident in working in or near water, comfortable using tools and equipment, an effective communicator, works well within a team environment and is confident with using basic IT. Full training will be provided to help you succeed.

Additionally, you"ll be part of a 24-hour emergency response team, participating in a standby rota and delivering crucial assistance during flood events or other incident responses.

The role follows a 9-day working pattern (with every second Friday off), and a badged vehicle is provided for travel to and from site. A full driving licence is essential. Any regular face-to-face meetings or training will be planned in advance.

What you will do
  • You will provide a manual labour service for the maintenance of NRW assets which include flood risk assets and NRW managed land.
  • You will have the ability to operate equipment such as hand-held tools which may include chainsaws.
  • You will have the ability to operate as a banksman and slinger/signaller.
  • You will have the ability to understand technical and utility plans and operate in compliance with the Construction Design and Management Regulations.
  • You will be a user of small plant and machinery i.e. Aebi/Reform, pedestrian mowers, woodchippers etc.
  • You will be part of an incident response team. Undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post.

  • Any other reasonable duties requested commensurate with the grade of this role.

Your qualifications, experience, knowledge and skills

  • Relevant Operators licences for tools, machinery and plant or work towards achieving.
  • IOSH Working Safely.
  • ICT competence. (basic level)
  • Emergency First Aid +F
  • Previous forestry, construction, agricultural, environmental or plant operators experience is desirable.
  • This is a physically demanding role so reasonable levels of fitness are required.
  • Confident working in and near water.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills are required for the role.
  • GCSE grade C (or equivalent) in English and Maths are essential.
  • Full UK driving licence ideally to include cat B + E. (trailer tow)

Welsh Language Level requirements:

  • Essential: Level A1 - Entry level (able to use and understand simple, basic phrases and greetings, no conversational Welsh)
