With branches in Rockhampton, Mackay, and Barcaldine, and a site office in Emerald, the Transport and Main Roads Program Delivery and Operations (PDO) Central Queensland Region (CQ Region) manages 9,076 km of state-controlled roads and approximately 1,510 km of the National Road Network. This role contributes to the development and delivery of the Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program (QTRIP).
The CQ Region covers about 604,824 km2, approximately 34.9% of Queensland. Its landscape ranges from coastal areas near the Great Barrier Reef and rainforests to rugged outback terrain with striking rock formations. The region has an estimated residential population of 422,141 people.

The Role
As a Principal Officer (Planning), you will engage in strategic, detailed, and investment planning, providing advice on network management concerning the region's state-controlled road network.
Responsibilities include:
- Coordinate and participate in integrated transport planning projects and corridor studies within the district.
- Lead, manage, and coordinate area planning, corridor strategies, feasibility, and concept phases (project proposal, options analysis, and business case development) of projects, working closely with consultants, advisors, and stakeholders.
- Monitor and report on project progress against time, cost, and quality specifications.
- Manage project teams and consultants to ensure skills, utilization, deliverables, timelines, and budgets are met.
- Prepare and deliver submissions and reports on planning and technical issues, and develop mitigation strategies for project obstacles.
- Review planning documents from state and local governments to assess their impact on Transport and Main Roads.
- Liaise with Safety & Operations, Asset Management, Maintenance, and Communications teams to inform the development of road projects addressing safety and efficiency issues identified through data, crash investigations, speed reviews, ITS/Electrical works, heavy vehicle demands, and stakeholder feedback.
Mandatory qualifications and conditions
- A four-year, Washington Accord-accredited Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) or equivalent, recognized by Engineers Australia against Washington Accord benchmarks, or a three-year Sydney Accord-accredited engineering degree such as Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Civil) or recognized equivalent.
- A current Class 'C' Driver's Licence.
- Due to access to sensitive data, a criminal history check will be conducted prior to appointment.
