About the Department

  • Growing innovative & competitive businesses, industries and regions
  • Investing in science and technology
  • Strengthening the resources sector.

The APS and the department offer a clear direction and meaningful work. You will be able to create a positive impact in people's lives whilst contributing to improved outcomes for Australia and our people.

If you would like to feel a strong connection to your work and you are accountable, committed and open to change, join us in shaping Australia's future.

About the team

The Oil and Gas Division is an integral part of the ongoing energy transition–in Australia, Asia and globally. The Division works on a wide variety of onshore and offshore resources issues including policy and regulatory functions, developing and interpreting legislation and program delivery.

The Division prides itself on being an inclusive and positive place to work. Our values include:

  • embracing clear and open communication
  • investing in staff development
  • being inclusive
  • valuing flexibility as a positive influence on productivity
  • supporting the physical and mental wellbeing of our staff.

The Gas Branch advises Government on gas supply policy in the context of the Government's long-term goals of energy transition. The Branch was responsible for developing and releasing the Future Gas Strategy and is involved in implementing some recommendations.

The Offshore Strategy Branch is responsible for providing policy and advice to support the safe and responsible regulation of Australia's offshore oil and gas resources. The branch is leading a review of the offshore environmental management regime to ensure it is fit for purpose in a decarbonising economy and reflects best practice for offshore environmental management.

The opportunity

The energy transformation underway in Australia is a complex process. Managing the complexity of the future of gas requires continued collaboration, close monitoring, regular review, and adjustment of actions. In the Gas Branch, you will have the opportunity to directly shape future decisions about the energy transition and support Australia's net zero goals.

The Offshore Strategy Branch is responsible for supporting the development and continuous improvement of key regulatory settings for the offshore petroleum and greenhouse gas storage industries. You will have the opportunity to contribute to the delivery of key government priorities. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a high-profile area, exercise creative and strategic thinking, and influence future policy direction.

What's in it for you?

Working in the Oil and Gas Division provides the opportunity to develop and sharpen your policy skills undertaking high-profile work. Depending on the team and role, you will network across States and Territories as well as the Commonwealth, engage in both long and short-term policy processes, undertake research and analysis, work on compliance activities including undertaking data analysis, and work directly on Cabinet processes and legislative development.

We strongly believe in providing members of our teams with the opportunities they need to build confidence and progress their careers and will consider flexible and remote working arrangements.

Our ideal candidate

Our department has a commitment to inclusion and diversity, with an ambition of being the best possible place to work. This reflects the importance we place on our people and on creating a workplace culture where each and every one of us is valued and respected for our contribution. Our ideal candidate adds to this culture and our workplace in their own way.

As an APS Level 6 employee, you will:

  • be able to undertake complex work under limited direction,
  • take responsibility for managing work projects to deliver results,
  • take initiative and exercise judgement to solve problems and produce high-quality advice for decision-makers,
  • be able to communicate confidently and persuasively,
  • build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
What you will do

As a Senior Policy/Program Officer (APS Level 6), in accordance with the APSC Work Level Standards for this classification, you will:

  • provide expert advice on more complex areas of policy,
  • work with independence, subject to limited direction against established priorities and practices to deliver quality outcomes,
  • prepare draft reports, briefing papers, speeches, Ministerial correspondence and discussion papers for review by Executive level employees,
  • research, interpret and apply legislation, including maintaining knowledge of relevant legislation and international conventions,
  • monitor changes in the broader work environment that may impact on work objectives,
