ASIC's Financial Advice and Investment Management team is seeking a seasoned Senior Lawyer to join their team. The successful candidate will have a strong background in Financial Advice regulation.

  • Salary from $147,074 to $162,634 (depending on experience) + 15.4 % superannuation

The team

The Financial Advice and Investment Management team is primarily responsible for ASIC's role in relation to the regulation and supervision of the investment management and personal financial advice sectors. This includes proactive engagement and the monitoring of firms and the sector overall. The team coordinates and provides strategic direction, industry knowledge, and technical expertise for ASIC's work in these sectors.

The role

As a Senior Lawyer , you will be responsible for identifying, addressing, and managing regulatory issues within the Financial Advice sector to ensure compliance with the law and enhance consumer outcomes. This role will involve not only offering expert legal guidance but also contributing to the development and implementation of regulatory strategies that align with ASIC's overarching goals and objectives. This position offers an opportunity to influence significant policy decisions and drive positive outcomes within the sector.

More Specifically, You Will
  • Lead risk-based supervision, reviewing and monitoring projects relating to the Financial Advice and Investment Management sectors to ensure adherence with the law
  • Provide analysis of regulatory issues and identify and propose solutions
  • Work collaboratively with other teams within ASIC to enable them to carry out their roles, especially the carrying out of enforcement and compliance action
  • Develop, review, and interpret policy and regulatory guidance
  • Collaborate with the Sector Leadership team in the development of sector strategy and priorities
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to effectively deliver the sector strategy
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of ASIC's regulatory framework and toolkit, relevant legislative and reporting requirements, best industry practice models
About You

As the ideal candidate, you will have extensive experience in advising on complex transactions or projects, utilising critical thinking and judgment developed in the relevant industry, legal firm, or regulatory environment. Additionally, you will possess significant knowledge of the Australian financial services industry, particularly from regulatory, product, operations, risk, or client service perspectives.

In Addition, You Will
  • Have a Bachelor of Law degree and a current practising certificate
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the Australian financial services industry generally and specifically from a regulatory, product, operations, risk, or client service viewpoint
  • Possess previous demonstrated experience analysing and considering the broader organisational, industry, and environmental context to develop sound and practical solutions to interpreting and applying legislation
  • Demonstrate experience in advising on complex transactions or projects requiring critical thinking and judgment gained working in the relevant industry, legal firm, or a regulatory environment
  • Be capable of delivering strategic priorities through stakeholder engagement and innovative solutions
  • Have substantial senior stakeholder management experience, including influencing and utilising industry networks
