Overview

Defence School Mentor & Admin Assistant. The position provides information and support and develops a range of activities for dependents of Defence members and families to ease the impact of mobility and service-related parental absence, and provides administrative support in the Student Well-being hub. The role also assists the Student Engagement and Wellbeing hub with daily administrative duties, including supporting students and staff with attendance, appointment bookings, first aid assistance, and general administrative tasks.

Responsibilities
  • Defence School Mentor: support and assist young people from Defence families to integrate into the school community; create awareness of their needs; work with individuals, groups, families and stakeholders to develop, implement and evaluate relevant programs; promote participation in school and community activities; provide advocacy and negotiation support and referrals to support services; develop resources and programs; contribute to the school team and provide a weekly activities report.
  • Administrative: record and monitor student attendance data daily; contact families for unexplained absences or permissions for early departures; maintain tidiness and usability of well-being hub spaces; support daily administrative functions including photocopying, filing, stock management, data entry, and basic records; assist with bookings, preparation of materials, and logistics for meetings or events; respond to routine enquiries with a friendly and professional approach; operate within relevant policies on confidentiality, records management, and safety; assist with first aid incidents.
Criteria / Qualifications
  1. Demonstrated ability to empathise and work with students from Year 10 to 12.
  2. Understanding of military lifestyle challenges and experience supporting students through transitions (desirable but not essential).
  3. High level of communication skills (oral and written) and ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of people.
  4. Ability to liaise with a range of individuals and community groups; demonstrated skills in advocacy, negotiations, problem solving and conflict resolution.
  5. Ability to organise own work, set priorities, meet deadlines, work independently and as part of a team, and maintain confidentiality.
  6. Ability to plan, organise, evaluate and deliver innovative programs, resources and activities relating to mobile families, students and the school community.
Reporting Relationships

The position reports to the Assistant Principal for everyday activities. The Business Support Officer and Student Wellbeing & Engagement Advisor will be in close contact for advice, support and training needs.

Additional Information

The successful applicant must have no significant criminal record as confirmed by a Police Criminal History check and have, or be in the process of obtaining, a current Working with Children Card. First aid certificate may be required.
