DESCRIPTION

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We support all AWS data centers and ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain, and we're looking for talented people who want to help.

You'll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You'll collaborate with people across AWS to deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. Experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.

In this role, you will be responsible for region strategy; business development & cost reduction opportunities with utilities and other power vendors; as well as program management & delivery of large scale critical high voltage power infrastructure projects for AWS data-centers. The ideal candidate will have a high-level technical understanding of high voltage substations and transmission lines, with experience in delivering substation programs on time, from design to energization inclusive of contract negotiations.

You will evaluate power needs for data center sites and develop power infrastructure strategies to serve those sites. Strong communication skills are required to work with internal and external stakeholders including engineering, real estate & planning teams, as well as government utilities & agencies, EPC contractors, and design consultants. You may need to manage multiple large-scale power infrastructure projects across different regions and work as part of an integrated Energy team across the APAC region to implement energy program requirements and deliver tangible reliability and cost-saving results.

This role is based out of Sydney, with 15% travel required.

Key job responsibilities

  1. Manage utility connection enquiries, load applications, contracts, and agreements to secure & optimize data center power capacity.
  2. Manage contestable works for utility projects such as switching stations and transmission lines.
  3. Support internal procurement, design, and construction teams through the end-to-end EPC process for dedicated substation power infrastructure delivery.
  4. Manage and report overall project delivery status and capital budgets for power infrastructure projects.
  5. Support the real estate team on easement and right of way negotiations for both utility and data center power supply requirements.
  6. Negotiate network tariff and support internal retail contract agreements to optimize power purchase costs.
  7. Undertake power due diligence for new or proposed data center sites to check power availability and feasibility.
  8. Identify risks and opportunities for the regional power infrastructure network and utility planning to support data center growth.
  9. Monitor power infrastructure reliability and take corrective action by working with operations and power utilities.
  10. Develop and execute energy strategies that leverage capital projects (utility grid connections, high voltage substations, energy storage, etc.) to reduce long-term energy costs.
  11. Conduct load forecasting for existing/new data centers.
  12. Identify and develop innovative cost savings projects and initiatives related to power infrastructure and supply.
  13. Work with utility regulators to develop policies and guidelines that enable broader AWS strategies and objectives.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Bachelor's Degree (BA/BS) in Engineering/Business or other technical field.
  2. Strong organizational, communication, and team building skills capable of building strategic working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  3. Experience managing complex projects through their lifecycle.
  4. Ability to self-start and self-motivate in a dynamic environment.
  5. Experience in budgeting and analyzing cost/benefit trade-offs across a strategic portfolio.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Experience in project management, planning, engineering, developing, or constructing substations or other 33kV or greater energy infrastructure.
  2. Basic understanding of power transmission and transformation for industrial applications.
  3. Familiarity with local grid codes, grid connectivity procedures, and standards of performance of Distribution/Transmission Utilities.
  4. Experience working directly with power utilities and other energy regulators.
  5. Experience successfully negotiating new tariff rates, power purchase agreements, and/or energy infrastructure contracts.
  6. Substation operations experience.
  7. Experience with IT infrastructure, data centers, and cloud services.
