Empirical Solutions is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Gateway Engineer to join our Defence-focused ICT team. Based in Canberra, this full-time role offers a unique opportunity to apply your expertise in critical network and gateway infrastructure to support mission-essential government services.

You will be part of a team that designs, builds, and sustains secure digital infrastructure – enabling Defence and National Security organisations to operate with confidence.

What You'll Be Doing

As a valued member of our engineering team, you will:

  • Design, implement, and evaluate infrastructure solutions to meet future ICT demand
  • Provide expert technical support for project build, test, and deployment activities
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation including design, implementation, and support procedures
  • Manage the administration and operation of secure gateway and network environments
  • Oversee patching, upgrades, disaster recovery, and high-availability solutions
  • Provide detailed specialist advice to executives, stakeholders, and interagency partners
  • Mentor less experienced engineers and proactively share knowledge as a subject matter expert
  • Research emerging technologies and recommend solutions to strengthen capability
  • Represent Empirical Solutions in interagency meetings and forums, influencing secure ICT outcomes
What We're Looking For

We welcome applications from professionals who bring:

  • At least 5 years' experience in the design, management, and maintenance of internet gateway and/or large-scale data centre networking environments
  • Proven expertise with Cisco Data Centre technologies (ACI, routers, Nexus switches, BGP/OSPF/EIGRP)
  • Hands-on experience with Palo Alto firewalls, IPS solutions, and VPN technologies
  • Strong background in F5 / Blue Coat load balancing and proxy services
  • Experience with hybrid and public cloud integration
  • Strong documentation, system architecture, and solution design skills
  • Knowledge of Australian Government security frameworks, including the ASD Information Security Manual and Essential Eight
  • Ability to work independently, applying sound judgement to complex technical challenges
  • AGSVA NV1/NV2 clearance (PV highly desirable)
Desirable Qualifications & Experience

You'll be highly regarded if you also bring:

  • Prior experience in Defence ICT gateway management or secure government networking
  • Vendor certifications (Cisco, Palo Alto, F5, Microsoft/AWS cloud)
  • Demonstrated leadership in continuous improvement and innovation initiatives
  • Experience influencing ICT strategy and policy in government or Defence contexts
