This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Principal Officer to join the Education Futures Institute, Capability branch, in the Queensland Department of Education. The Principal Officer, Finance role will manage significant budgets spread over a large number of cost centres with varying reporting requirements.

The EFI provides high quality, targeted professional learning for staff located in metropolitan, regional, rural and remote locations across the state. The EFI empowers staff with the skills, knowledge and capability to excel in their role.

The EFI is a key system initiative in the department's education strategy, Equity and Excellence: Realising the potential of every student.

Your Role

The Principal Officer, Finance will be responsible for managing a significant budget, spread over a large number of cost centres and nodes with varying reporting requirements.

Duties Associated With This Role Include
  • Ensuring sound financial management and operational activities for the Capability Branch (including EFI in each Region) in line with divisional and departmental accountability standards (including leading mid-year and March budget reviews and deferral requests for the Branch).
  • Delivering a range of financial corporate services, including budget (re-)profiling and reporting, operational financial activities such as journals, SAPA schedules, monthly accruals, cost centre maintenance.
  • Providing governance oversight of budgets through financial verifications and the preparation of monthly financial reports.
  • Providing strategic and operational advice and support to the Capability Branch Directors (including EFI in each Region) and Executive Leadership Team.
  • Contributing to the preparation of complex reports, submissions, briefing notes and corporate correspondence where relevant.

The Principal Officer, Finance reports to the Manager, Governance & Service Delivery, Capability Branch. While there are no direct reports, the Principal Officer, Finance is responsible for supporting, mentoring and overseeing the work of another officer.

About You

The ideal applicant will:

  • Have experience managing a high-profile significant budget spread over a large number of cost centres and nodes with varying reporting requirements.
  • Have developed skills in finance activities within a public service setting.
  • Have high-level written and oral communication skills and be able to engage with a wide range of internal and external high-level stakeholders.
  • Be able to work in a fast-paced environment, bringing high-level skills in problem solving, prioritisation and managing competing demands in a timely manner.
