Balfour Beatty's Roadmap to a Zero Carbon Construction Site

Balfour Beatty has initiated a Roadmap to achieve a zero carbon construction site, currently being trialled at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.

Working through the SCAPE Civil Engineering Scotland framework with our client, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, and our supply chain partners, we are exploring every aspect of the project to identify lower carbon options and solutions. Our focus is to integrate carbon considerations into our decision-making process, prioritizing it alongside cost, quality, time, and safety.

Previous 'net zero' sites primarily addressed scope 1 and 2 emissions and included carbon offsetting measures. Our goal is to go beyond this, aiming for a truly zero carbon site by considering all factors involved in infrastructure creation—from materials used, logistics of transportation, to on-site activities during construction until handover. We acknowledge that some areas are outside our control with limited influence.

While we are not yet ready to implement a zero carbon construction site universally, we recognize the importance of starting this journey now to meet our Net Zero by 2050 target, as outlined in Balfour Beatty's Sustainability Strategy, Building New Futures. We are committed to pushing boundaries and engaging in breakthrough debates to drive progress. Our Roadmap details our ambitions and the steps we plan to take to realize them.

We aim to inspire the global industry by documenting our progress and challenges, sharing our learnings through our diary. Collaboration and scaling successful strategies are essential to accelerating decarbonization in construction, unlocking its vast potential for positive impact.
