Consistently voted as one of the top intern programs in Australia since 2018 (AAGE), the Public Transport Authority's (PTA) Vacation Student Program provides opportunities for current university students to work alongside experienced engineers, helping them develop an understanding of the PTA's business and apply their skills practically.

The rapid growth of Western Australia's economy has increased demand for efficient public transport, leading to the development of Australia's premier public transport network, known for being efficient, safe, and eco-friendly.

About the role:

The PTA offers an exciting opportunity for students studying a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronic (or equivalent) to join our Vacation Student Program. The program runs for twelve weeks, from Monday 24 November 2025 to Friday 13 February 2026. You will be assigned a supervisor and will complete meaningful work, contributing actively to the PTA. You will also join a networking group connecting you with current and former PTA graduates.

How to Apply:

To apply for the 2024/25 Vacation Student Program, you MUST:

  • Be currently studying towards a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical, Mechanical, or Mechatronic Engineering (or equivalent). Preference will be given to students in their penultimate year.
  • Be available for full-time employment during the 12-week program.

Submit the following:

  • A current CV;
  • A recent Academic Transcript to verify your WAM;
  • Information on the online application form:
    • Your interested discipline;
    • Reasons for applying;
    • Two work-related references;
    • Confirmation of current enrollment and intention to return to studies in 2025.

Applicants shortlisted for further assessment will be asked to undertake psychometric testing. WAM, current year of study, and testing results will be part of the evaluation. Refer to the Vacation Student Recruitment Process Map for details on the recruitment process and timelines.

While preference is given to Australian permanent residents or Australian/New Zealand citizens, candidates with temporary working visas allowing residence and work in Australia until November 2025 will also be considered.
