We have an opportunity for an outstanding communicator and strategic relationship-builder with strong digital capability and leadership potential, who will contribute to WIMR's philanthropic growth through sophisticated, professional, and thoughtful donor engagement.

Reporting to the Head of Westmead Institute for Medical Research Foundation, you will work collaboratively with the Foundation team to develop and manage the Philanthropy program, focusing on Major Gifts and Trust and Foundation revenue — essential elements of the overall Development strategy. You will build strong, enduring relationships with key stakeholder groups, prospecting and developing relationships with new donors, existing donors, and community members with a strong connection to the cause, aiming for large, ongoing gifts.

You will apply your relationship management skills to identify, evaluate, and pursue major gift prospects. You will enjoy building relationships from the ground up, working with the Head of Foundation to develop and implement targeted major gifts engagement strategies.

You will independently research prospects, engage with donors to understand their priorities, and represent WIMR effectively, informing potential donors of the Institute's scope and opportunities for support. Stewarding donors to build trust and ensure their long-term commitment will be key.

The successful candidate will be persuasive and strategic in engagement, both through personal interaction and written communication. Exceptional emotional intelligence, authenticity, and respect are essential to cultivate long-term philanthropic partnerships.

You will bring:

  • Exceptional persuasive writing and communication skills, with experience in grant applications, donor proposals, prospecting letters, speeches, newsletters, and other donor communications. Outstanding storytelling ability is critical to professionally and inspiringly represent WIMR's research.
  • Proven experience in cultivating and stewarding relationships with high-net-worth individuals, using a confident, emotionally intelligent, and tailored approach respecting each donor's motivations.
  • Success in managing a portfolio of major donors and foundations, including prospect identification, engagement strategy development, gift securing, and long-term stewardship.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build authentic, confident, and enduring relationships with donors, researchers, senior executives, board members, and partners.
  • Experience designing and executing sophisticated donor activities and events, leveraging resources to maximize engagement.
  • High emotional intelligence, tact, and discretion, engaging thoughtfully across diverse communities.
  • Strong organizational skills and self-management, prioritising demands, working independently, and maintaining high standards while meeting deadlines.
  • Resourcefulness and strategic problem-solving, creatively leveraging assets within a small, evolving team.
  • Leadership potential, capable of representing and deputising for the Head of Foundation, and contributing to team leadership.
  • Strong digital literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office, CRM systems, and digital tools (including AI platforms) to enhance engagement and workflows. Familiarity with GEMS portal is desirable.
  • Experience in the NFP sector, preferably within Medical Research or health-related environments.
  • Qualifications in Communications, Fundraising, Business, Arts, or related fields, or equivalent experience.

Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience. Salary packaging options include a pre-tax benefit of $15,900 per year, plus an additional $2,650 for entertainment and accommodation, increasing take-home pay.

This role is full-time but open to part-time at 0.8 FTE (4 days/week).
