Network Specialist

The Senior Network Specialist is responsible for supporting the migration to Microsoft 365, enhancing the network infrastructure, and contributing to digital transformation initiatives for a NSW local council in the Newcastle/Hunter region. This role blends project-based work with ongoing support for day-to-day network operations, ensuring the integrity, security, and performance of the network systems. The Senior Network Specialist will collaborate with the IT teams to implement network upgrades, provide expert troubleshooting, and optimise network performance.

Key Accountabilities

  • Microsoft 365 & Azure Integration: Ensuring network systems are optimised for cloud solutions like Microsoft 365 and Azure.
  • Network & Security Operations: Managing network security and performance monitoring, ensuring best practices are followed.
  • Backup & Recovery: Supporting backup and disaster recovery processes in line with Council's ICT disaster recovery plan.
  • Network Maintenance: Performing regular maintenance, including system patches and updates, ensuring continuous performance optimisation.

Technical Skills

  • Network Engineering: Strong technical background in managing network infrastructure (LAN/WAN, routers, switches, firewalls).
  • Microsoft 365 & Azure: Knowledge of integrating and supporting Microsoft 365 tools (Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams) and Azure.
  • Security Protocols: Expertise in implementing and managing network security measures, including firewalls, VPNs, and IDS/IPS.
  • Network Monitoring: Proficiency in using network management tools (e.g., SolarWinds, PRTG) for performance monitoring and troubleshooting.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Network Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Certifications: Certifications such as CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA/CCNP, or Microsoft Certified: Azure Network Engineer Associate.
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience in network engineering, particularly in cloud integrations and network optimisation.
  • Industry Experience: Experience within a government or similarly-sized public sector organisation is preferred.

Additional Requirements

  • NSW Driver's Licence: A valid Class C NSW driver's licence is required for the role.
  • Availability: Flexibility to participate in after-hours support or on-call rotation, as needed.

This is a 12 month contract role.
