Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) Area Offices provide tailored support to Rural Fire Brigades and volunteers, connecting local needs with higher-level resources to enhance training, mitigation, asset management, and operations. The main goal is to support volunteers effectively to ensure operational bushfire response.

Each Area covers several Local Government Areas and includes staff, volunteers, and Brigades involved in bushfire management, mitigation, and response for rural and semi-rural communities across the state.

Reporting to the Executive Manager, District Coordination, you will be part of the District Leadership team, working closely with volunteers and stakeholders to manage bushfire preparedness and response, contribute to planning and evaluation, and oversee resources to support staff, volunteers, and Brigades. You will also respond to large-scale fires and emergencies, providing on-site command and operational leadership as per legislative requirements.

  • Must meet the requirements outlined in the generic RFSQ Inspector role description.

Highly desirable requirements

  • Effective communication with stakeholders from rural and remote communities.

Primary duties

  • Lead the Area team to execute regional strategic and operational plans, ensuring high service delivery to support brigades and volunteers in bushfire and emergency response.
  • Manage change programs through consultation with staff, volunteers, and stakeholders to embed reforms and initiatives.
  • Act as Chief Fire Warden for the Area, supporting prescribed burns and permit systems.
  • Coordinate with the Regional Duty Manager for operational awareness and respond to large-scale incidents, providing leadership on-site or at incident control centers.
  • Manage human and physical resources to ensure operational capacity and readiness.
  • Support asset management by overseeing maintenance and operational readiness of equipment and infrastructure.
  • Participate in brigade and group meetings, providing updates and advice.
  • Engage in forums and exercises to promote collaborative emergency management.
  • Ensure data and system updates comply with policies to improve reporting accuracy.

Additional information

  • Must meet attributes of the generic Inspector role.
  • Applicants with Rural Officer Two (RFSO2) experience or equivalent are encouraged to apply.
  • Volunteers and external skilled parties are highly encouraged to apply.
  • Proven commitment to bushfire competencies and regional teamwork is essential.
  • Travel and deployment within and outside the state may be required.
  • Flexible working hours, including nights and weekends, may be necessary.
  • Participation in professional development is expected.
  • Training will be provided to maintain competencies within the Queensland Disaster Management Arrangements framework.
