Job Description

The Director of Medical Services works as a team member within the Office of the Executive Director of Medical Services at the Northwest Hospital and Health Service. The role focuses on leadership, administration, and management of remote facility medical models of care, including College accreditation, recruitment and retention of rural generalist trainees, and clinical leadership for Queensland Health funded medical workforce initiatives. The position aims to develop skills in medical management and understanding of strategic and operational coordination to ensure quality, safe patient care.

This is a training position accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (RACMA), subject to College guidelines. Duties are defined at the beginning of each term through interviews with the supervisor and preceptor where possible. The role is suitable for RACMA candidates committed to rural practice, with at least two-thirds of their RACMA Fellowship training in rural areas (MMM2-7).

The North West Hospital and Health Service (NWHHS) provides public hospital and health services across North West Queensland, serving approximately 32,000 people over 300,000 square kilometres. Services include a regional hospital, multipurpose health services, remote hospitals, primary health clinics, and community health centres, supporting diverse lifestyles from coastal to remote outback living.

Essential Criteria
  • Current general registration as a Medical Practitioner with AHPRA
  • Specialist registration in another specialty is highly regarded
  • Current RACMA Candidate or applicant for RACMA Fellowship Training Program (FTP)
  • Proof of qualifications and ongoing RACMA candidacy required prior to appointment
  • Proof of vaccinations/immunity as per Queensland Health policy
Remuneration Package

Approximate total remuneration: $386,119 to $578,751, depending on level and experience, plus:

  • Accommodation as per NWHHS policy
  • 5 weeks annual leave
  • 3.6 weeks professional development leave
