Overview

Expression of Interest for Future Campaigns – Fire Communications Officer (FCO). This is a recruitment activity to prepare for the next Fire Communications Officer campaign. Fire Communications Officers are offered on a Permanent Part-Time basis, with the exception of Central Region – Rockhampton, where roles are Permanent Full-Time.

Location: FireCom centres across Queensland (FireCom Southport, Brisbane, Toowoomba, Kawana, Rockhampton, Townsville, Cairns).

About Us: The Queensland Fire Department (QFD) provides fire prevention, preparedness and response services, multi-hazard emergency response, and supports community safety outcomes across Queensland. The department includes Queensland Fire and Rescue (QFR), Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ), and related functions, with a commitment to cultural capability and partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.

Purpose of the role

The Fire Communications centres (FireComs) handle emergency call taking, on-scene communications dispatch, resource coordination, fire alarm monitoring, general enquiries, data updates, and reporting. Staff are trained in incident management systems, hazardous materials, and technical rescue operations, with deployments nationally and internationally as required.

Key requirements

Mandatory Requirements

  • Currently holds a valid Blue Card (from Blue Card Services), with attached evidence to support
  • Australian Citizenship, New Zealand Citizenship or Australian Resident Status
  • Have or ability to obtain Certificate III in Public Safety (Emergency Communications Centre Operations)
  • Ability to successfully complete training programs of the 'Communications Training and Professional Development Program (CTPDP) at the prescribed level

Desirable Requirements

  • Typing speed of 45 wpm with 95% accuracy
  • Have or ability to obtain Apply First Aid and CPR Certificates
Your key accountabilities
  • Accept incoming fire and other relevant emergency incident calls and enquiries and collect relevant information.
  • Assess risks and resource availability to determine appropriate response.
  • Despatch and coordinate resources and notify other organisations per the Communications Doctrine and Directives.
  • Maintain and update incident information in the centre's computer aided despatch system; monitor progress and liaise with operational staff until incident completion.
  • Complete post-incident administration including information and reports to stations and other agencies.
  • Monitor alarm signals and respond per Communications Doctrine and Directives.
  • Provide mentoring and guidance to new staff.
  • Contribute to improvements of operational and administrative systems and procedures.
  • Identify system and technical faults and liaise with Specialist Operational Services Unit for reporting, maintenance and updates to communications technology.
  • Undertake general administrative and project duties as allocated (e.g., updating resource information, portfolio activities, regular tests of systems and equipment).
