About Us

The Queensland Fire Department (QFD) provides fire prevention, preparedness and response services to fire in the built and landscape environments, as well as scientific and specialist capabilities to Queensland communities. The QFD offers multi-hazard emergency response, including road crash rescue, bushfire, hazardous material, technical and vertical rescue, severe weather incidents, remote and swiftwater rescue, and supports community safety outcomes. The department encompasses Queensland Fire and Rescue (QFR), Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ), and the broader department working together to pre-empt, prevent, mitigate and manage emergencies for Queensland communities.

The QFD is focused on reframing its relationship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities and organisations through initiatives such as Path to Treaty and Closing the Gap, building cultural capability.

Purpose of the role

The Fleet Delivery team leads fleet operations, fleet strategy and mechanical services, providing repairs and maintenance of heavy, light and medium commercial fleet vehicles and equipment to all QFD members. The role supports lifecycle management and best practice in fleet and equipment management to meet operational capability and organisational objectives.

We are looking for enthusiastic entry-level school leavers and/or experienced apprentices to continue their apprenticeships, committing to approximately four years of heavy vehicle apprenticeship while working in the QFD Fleet Maintenance workshops. You will be supervised by a qualified tradesperson and assist with repair and maintenance of fire appliances and related equipment to comply with heavy vehicle legislation and regulations.

Key requirements
  • Valid driver's license; familiarity with manual and automatic transmissions
  • Eligibility for enrolment or progression towards the relevant Trade Certificate in Heavy Vehicle Mechanic, or equivalent as deemed suitable by the Commissioner, QFD
  • Commitment to complete a four-year apprenticeship and obtain a nationally recognised qualification
Your key accountabilities / Responsibilities
  • Learn and perform repairs and maintenance on light and heavy vehicles (including transmissions), light fabrication and auto electrical, under supervision
  • Diagnose potential faults and repair vehicle mechanical problems according to maintenance schedules
  • Isolate problems and provide safe, practical solutions for fire appliances and equipment
  • Use hand and specialised tools and electronic diagnostic equipment in compliance with safety requirements
  • Participate in ongoing manufacturer and in-house training to maintain competencies and obtain a trade certificate in heavy vehicle road transport
