The Finance Innovation and Analytics unit is responsible for the design, development, and implementation of best practice financial business intelligence (BI) to support and enhance decision making on strategic and tactical financial management matters. The team supports contemporary and innovative business practices, leveraging technology solutions to streamline and enhance finance and business processes. It works closely with key stakeholders to ensure alignment with departmental strategy and industry best practices to support high-quality and fiscally sustainable outcomes for QFD.

Reporting to the Executive Manager, you will lead the delivery of contemporary analytics and business intelligence solutions that support QFD financial management and high-quality decision making. You will provide high-quality advice to senior leaders on finance analytics and business intelligence issues, build strong relationships with stakeholders, and enable the development of high-quality data models and interactive reporting solutions with a focus on end-user experience. You will lead and implement finance business practice and process improvements, ensuring robust technical environments that support the business intelligence capability for high availability of financial products and services.

About Us

The Queensland Fire Department (QFD) provides fire prevention, preparedness, and response services to fire in built and landscape environments, along with scientific and specialist capabilities to Queensland communities. The department encompasses Queensland Fire and Rescue (QFR), Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ), and broader functions working together to pre-empt, prevent, mitigate, and manage the consequences of fires and other emergencies, supporting community safety and volunteer membership across the state.

The QFD is committed to reframing its relationship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities, and organizations through activities in the QFD Reframing the Relationship Plan, contributing to Closing the Gap outcomes, and building cultural capability.

Purpose of the role

The Finance Innovation and Analytics unit is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing best practice financial BI to support decision making. The team supports innovative practices and leverages technology to improve finance and business processes, working closely with stakeholders to ensure strategic alignment and high-quality outcomes.

Key requirements

  • Experience analyzing complex datasets and translating requirements into data models and structures.
  • Skills in BI technologies including data warehousing (Azure, SQL Server), SQL, PowerBI, and qualifications in data science or related fields are highly desirable.
  • Experience in financial management and tertiary / postgraduate qualifications in data analytics or related disciplines.

Provide strategic advice on best practice approaches for performance management and BI products to influence decision-making.Lead analysis and resolution of complex business problems, providing innovative solutions and architecture to meet data needs.Engage with stakeholders to determine business requirements and develop effective data models and reporting solutions to enhance financial management and governance.Provide technical leadership and mentorship to team members and stakeholders to uplift BI capabilities and ensure modern, best practices.Manage the technical environment to ensure high availability and minimize business disruption.Lead initiatives to improve financial management processes through technology solutions.Research industry trends to support and enhance the BI environment and solutions.Build team capability through performance management, development, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
