We are committed to providing the highest levels of healthcare and services. We are seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a "BASIC TRAINEE" (previously advertised as SRMO) for 2026.
This is a 12-month role offering a 6-month rotation in the Emergency Surgical Unit (ESU) of the Department of General Surgery and 6 months in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as part of an agreed training program between both units.
It is intended for junior doctors pursuing a career in General Surgery but would also be a valuable experience prior to training in other surgical and critical care specialties. The Basic Trainee position in the ESU is a registrar position administratively but not functionally: It aligns with the registrar term dates but is part of the RMO roster and functions as a senior RMO.
The roster includes some night shifts, with time allocated to undertake some administrative duties (primarily rostering).
The Basic Trainee may be called upon to cover for registrar leave if necessary. The ICU position is at a Junior Registrar level, with constant support from senior staff but also the expectation of seeing patients independently and performing invasive procedures.
The roster involves regular day and night shifts (the unit has 4 on-site medical staff overnight).Royal Hobart Hospital is Tasmania's largest hospital and major referral centre. As the major clinical teaching and research centre, RHH works closely with the University of Tasmania and other institutions.Royal Hobart Hospital offers challenging and stimulating employment and future career opportunities with salary commensurate with qualification and experience.Superannuation and salary packaging Support and dynamic work environment Strong Professional and social networks A unique and well-balanced lifestyleSalary$134,930 per annum + 12.0 % superannuation + access to salary packagingSalary range is in accordance with Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022ClassificationMedical Practitioner Level 5Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022AwardMedical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) AwardPeriod of EmploymentFixed term, full time day work, working 76 hours per fortnight plus 10 hours protected training time (pro rata), commencing 2 February 2026 until 1 February 2027.Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time and casual vacancies.Location Surgical Services – Emergency Surgery UnitMake It Tasmania | Move for a great lifestyleTasmanian | The quiet pursuit of the extraordinaryDutiesAdmission of patients.
