About the role Our client is seeking a Legal Counsel based in Sydney or Melbourne for an opportunity to contribute to its national property portfolio and commercial operations.
Reporting to the divisional Head of Legal and Chief Commercial Officer, the role performs a crucial function in: Managing and growing the business' portfolio of business premises via negotiation and drafting of leases, licences, and management agreements Acquisitions of properties and businesses Procurement and integration of new tech Providing generalist in-house advice on an ad-hoc basis to other teams and internal stakeholders, including regional and divisional leadership teams Managing external counsel (including top-tier law firms) on larger projects Applying a commercial lens to all documents drafted, deals negotiated and advice provided About you You might be a high-performing private practice lawyer looking to take your skills and experience in-house, or an in-house legal counsel looking for an opportunity to grow and progress your career in an environment that encourages continuing progression and growth.
To be considered, you will need: A minimum of 4 years' (and ideally 5-7 years') post-admission experience, which must include dedicated property law experience in either a reputable law firm or in-house A proven ability to negotiate, review and draft leases, licenses and commercial agreements (with the aid of precedents and internal and external mentorship) Commercial acumen, specifically an advanced ability to understand the business and its commercial drivers along with devising practical and commercial solutions to legal problems Strong general drafting and document analysis skills with the necessary attention to detail Excellent communication skills and ability to develop strong professional relationships with a mix of senior internal stakeholders Organisational skills to handle multiple diverse and ongoing matters, often with tight time constraints Confidence to provide ad hoc legal advice to internal stakeholders and liaise with a variety of external professionals The successful candidate will be a driven self-starter with the ambition to obtain autonomy quickly, take initiative and add value to the business wherever possible.
