Riot engineers bring deep knowledge of specific technical areas but also value the opportunity to work across multiple domains. As Engineering Managers, we gain organizational alignment by building a strong engineering vision and offering creative solutions to organizational design. We also serve as mentors for engineers, guiding their performance and finding growth opportunities delivering compelling gameplay player experiences.

As a Manager, Software Engineering on the Modes team, under League's Gameplay initiative, you will work with a multidisciplinary leadership team and lead engineers to increase sustainability for current rotating modes and develop tools and workflows that make it easier for designers and artists to create awesome experiences for our players. The play appreciation of our game depends on our ability to keep the game fresh, engaging, and fair for new and seasoned players. You will manage engineers who specialize in the league gameplay tech. You will work with leaders to refine the team's long-term vision, and the organizational plan to support it.

Responsibilities:
  • Manage and socialize an engineering vision for the team
  • Work with team leaders to create a organization and staffing plan that supports product goals
  • Identify, recruit, interview, and hire software engineers to help teams scale effectively.
  • Support the engineers with your own deep engineering expertise
  • Support engineers' careers through mentorship and identifying growth opportunities
  • Manage the team's health and performance from a place of empathy
  • Identify and build improvements to allow League of Legends to more sustainably maintain rotating game modes.
  • Support the team to develop features and UI in the League of Legends game engine using C++.
  • Support the team to identify and automate aspects of creating and running existing rotating game modes.
  • Understand the backend services powering League of Legends and support the team to make technical decisions to best use them.
Required Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of experience building and operating software at scale as a Software Engineer
  • 1+ years experience directly leading an engineering team either as an Engineering Manager or Technical Lead and mentor.
  • Experience in Agile processes and continuous delivery
  • Experience working closely with non-engineering collaborators to deliver value
  • Experience with C++
  • Experience working with complex code bases
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or comparable field or equivalent experience
Desired Qualifications:
  • Professional experience in the games industry
