Description:

Osborne Richardson specilaises in recruiting into the public sector. Our local council client situated in Southwest Sydney is looking for a communications officer for a 6 month contract.
You role is to support the council with their copywriting, media relations and communications support.

Key Duties:

  • Produce effective and targeted external communications campaigns and publications, to promote Council's objectives.
  • Contribute to the dissemination of key corporate messages, ensuring they support Council's strategic and corporate direction.
  • Research, write, distribute and or edit Council's publications, as required, including community newsletters and enewsletters.
  • If required, work with Procurement to coordinate any tender processes relating to communications contracts, involving Council newsletters, Council advertising and Council's weekly newspaper promotions total value of around $500,000 a year.
  • Act as Council's inhouse photographer to meet Council's Executive and media requirements.
  • Research, write and distribute media releases, speeches, articles and other written materials that are relevant, timely and accurate and have high impact, as required.
  • Act as an organisational 'Editor', by reviewing publications and communications to maintain consistent messaging.
  • Work closely with media staff to liaise with local, metropolitan and specialist media, ensuring Council's reputation is managed and Council is responsive to media requests, providing information that is relevant, timely and accurate.
  • Identify opportunities for good news stories, developing these news items or story lines and placing them as effectively as possible within the media, and Council's external communications.
  • Maintain a high awareness to political sensitivities and confidential items, and managing the communication aspects of these issues effectively.
  • Provide communications advice to internal customers, as one of the Communications Unit's Communications Partners.
  • Prepare Communications Plans for internal customers to support their campaigns, projects, programs, events and initiatives.

About you:

  • Essential qualifications
  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant communications field, or relevant industry or news media experience.
Essential Experience

  • At least five years' experience in the news media or public relations, preferably within a Government context with exposure to different types of news media.
  • Experience in developing and implementing effective communications strategies and activities.
  • Demonstrated experience in producing and editing highquality communications content.
  • Excellent written communication skills, including experience in preparing media stories and or media releases and supporting materials, speeches and publications.
  • Ability to develop and maintain a network of media contacts across a range of local, metropolitan and specialist news media.
  • Welldeveloped interpersonal and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to develop and implement effective media and communications strategies that increase the positive profile of an organisation and raise public understanding of its programs and services.
  • Experience of working collaboratively as part of a team, and in crossfunctional workplace teams, to achieve agreed outcomes.
