What will you be doing?

  • Provide data management, analysis, and research assistance for the AusVaxSafety national vaccine surveillance system.
  • Locate and synthesise scientific literature, especially that related to the monitoring of adverse reactions to immunisation.
  • Create scientific papers, reports and other documentation as needed to support the creation of immunisation practise guidelines and policies, publishing in academic journals, and public distribution of knowledge about diseases that can be prevented by vaccines and the proper use of vaccines.
  • Contribute to NCIRS's research efforts, especially in the area of vaccine safety.

NCIRS is the leading organisation in Australia working in research that provides expert advice to support evidence-informed immunisation policy and guideline development, evaluation of the National Immunisation Program and the surveillance of vaccine-preventable diseases, vaccine coverage and vaccine safety.

NCIRS has national and international recognition in this arena and has a growing program of work providing technical support to countries in the Indo-Pacific region.


The Centre is based within the Division of Research of the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network, Westmead Campus, NSW, Australia, but has an all-age research remit and is affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health and the Sydney Institute for Infectious Diseases (Sydney ID) at the University of Sydney.


About AusVaxSafety

  • Masters level qualification in public health or applied epidemiology or higher from a tertiary institution recognised in Australia; or equivalent qualifications and/or demonstrated experience working fulltime in public health.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with demonstrated ability to produce high quality scientific writing of various types including research reports and technical reports that inform policy or practice.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability in data analysis and presentation using statistical programs such as Stata or R.
  • Proven ability to undertake and complete research projects and to produce research reports in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Australian healthcare system and Australian Immunisation programs.
  • Demonstrated interest in vaccine safety or VPD epidemiology.
  • Experience in the use of relevant computer software packages including Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint and Word) and bibliographic databases (e.g. EndNote or equivalent).

All NSW Health workers are required to have completed a primary course (2 doses) of a COVID-19 vaccine which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA).

New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate (IM011 immunisation medical exemption form) certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW.

Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.
