About us

Queensland Hydro is a publicly owned entity established by the Queensland Government to design, deliver, operate and maintain long duration pumped hydro energy storage assets that will be the cornerstone for the transformation of the state's energy system.

The organisation will drive delivery of world-class pumped hydro assets to provide the long-term storage and reliability needed to power Queensland's clean energy future. The organisation will play a critical role in assisting the Queensland Government to meet its renewable energy targets and net zero emissions by 2050, supporting the shift in the Australian economy to a decarbonised energy system.

The role

The Lead, Hydrographic Services will be responsible for coordinating surface and groundwater monitoring activities, installation and calibration of monitoring instrumentation, groundwater sampling and water quality sampling. They will lead the establishment of a flood early warning network for Queensland Hydro assets through construction and operations phases.

Reporting to the Manager, Water Planning and Hydrology, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in assisting with the planning, development and delivery of infrastructure and initiatives supporting the delivery of the Borumba and Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro Projects and expectations of the community and stakeholders.

Key accountabilities in this role include:

  • Oversee the installation, servicing, calibration, operation, and maintenance of rural and remote autonomous environmental monitoring stations.
  • Ensure reliable collection of calibrated data from autonomous environmental monitoring stations.
  • Undertake field water quality sample collection from both surface water and groundwater, using a range of techniques with adherence to QA principles and procedures.
  • Maintaining accurate record keeping including field observations and calibration of monitoring equipment.
  • Oversee access to secure data storage services.
  • Verification of collected data using relevant computer software package/s.
  • Establish data sharing agreements with other agencies (e.g. BOM)
  • Support establishment of a flood early warning network (FEWS or similar).
  • Oversee data collation and presentation to support preparation of project and governance dashboards and reports, including for the Chief Executive, Project Steering Committee and Board briefings.
  • Project management, liaison with Government and external stakeholders and general correspondence (e.g. DRDMW, DESI).
  • Mentoring and training of junior Hydrographers/Technicians.
  • Sound knowledge of, and adherence to, health & safety principles.

About you

To be considered for this position, you will ideally possess:

  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline such as engineering, science or similar.
  • Significant experience in hydrography or similar fields.
  • Previous experience in the water industry, preferably in Queensland, will be highly regarded.
  • Experience in water resource management in the hydropower industry, will be highly regarded.
  • Strong stakeholder relationship building and management skills in both public and private settings, with a mindset of achieving win-win outcomes.
  • A sound understanding of contemporary water resource management issues, particularly in Queensland, and a sound understanding of the regulatory frameworks in place for water resource management in Queensland.
  • An affinity for innovation and problem solving.
  • Sound asset and resource management knowledge and experience.
